Water Treatment Plant Mechanic Relief Operator 2.8 2.8 out of 5 stars Phoenixville, PA 19460 $36.81 an hour - Full-time Borough of Phoenixville 4 reviews $36.81 an hour - Full-time Summary Maintain proper functioning of the water treatment plant by relieving operators on shift work rotation and performing routine maintenance on all plant equipment essential to the operation of 4.5 million‐gallon per day water treatment plant; 24 hour operation Experience This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent Two years' experience in the maintenance and repair of water treatment machinery and equipment or equivalent Qualification/Skills & Knowledge Requirements Must have thorough knowledge of water treatment principles, processes, and plant operations Must have knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices utilized in the repair and maintenance of the water treatment plant equipment and machinery Must possess skill in the use and care of machinery and equipment used in all phases of the operation Must have the ability to meet approved physical standards Essential Duties and Responsibilities Ensure preventative maintenance is performed as required on water plant and pump stations and all related water treatment operation equipment Perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude Conducts periodic inspection of all plant machinery and equipment, changing oil as necessary Ensure routine maintenance is completed on daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis Performs daily inspection of pumping stations and maintains equipment located at site Maintain and repair meters, pumps (submersible and sump), floats, valves, mixers, variable frequency drives (VFDs), control panels, sludge pumps, air conditioners, SCADA equipment, and laboratory equipment Maintain and repair all stand‐by generators Maintain and repair all chemical feed equipment Provide for corrective and emergency maintenance as required to minimize plant downtime Assess problems and determine timeline and resources needed to make repairs. Notify superintendent and appropriate staff as required, based on problems Operates plant equipment such as trucks, motor boat, forklift, and overhead crane Unloads chemicals from delivery trucks Maintains and repairs water intake areas Conducts necessary tests such as pH, chlorine residual, turbidity, and fluoride Analyzes and records test results and makes any necessary changes to chemical flows based on test results Performs required laboratory tests, interprets and analyzes the results and initiates corrective action, if necessary Collect and maintain accurate and legible data Comprehend and follow written and oral instructions Makes periodic rounds of plant during shift to observe and determine if pumps, filters, motor and other equipment are properly operating Records test results data and completes other required charts and logs based on meter readings and visual observation of water flow, temperature, and weather conditions Monitors and controls flow of chemicals used in the water treatment process and adjusts levels when necessary; records amounts used and adjustments May perform routine maintenance such as repacking pumps, greasing valves, cleaning intake, cleaning reservoir and settling basin Maintain required licenses and certifications Perform other duties as assigned Physical Requirements Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds in weight Ability to use all required personal protective equipment to include the correct breathing respirator for hazardous work environments Ability to detect and differentiate colors and shades of color Ability to see, read, print, and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols, both large and small Ability to climb stairs or step ladders Able to use a variety of hand and power tools requiring a high degree of dexterity Ability to hear normal conversations and communicate clearly, both orally and written Ability to work in adverse environmental weather conditions (day or night) Ability to work around chemicals used in maintenance of facilities and water treatment processes Ability to sit, stand or walk for periods longer than 30 minutes Ability to safely operate outboard motor and boat in any type of weather conditions, at any time of day, to maintain raw water intake structure Ability to work in confined or closed spaces Ability to work on top of tall structures, such as chemical and water tanks Ability to work, walk, and stand on unstable soil conditions License/Certificate Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license Must possess and maintain a water treatment operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Class A, Subclass 1, 7, 8, 12 in the time specified by the Commonwealth to qualify for the certification exam, from the time of hire
