POSITION SUMMARY
Layouts, fits and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms.
PREREQUISITES
Minimum requirement is 4 years experience in the precision welding trade working from sketches and prints, doing applicable layout and precision heli-arc, acetylene, and electric welding. Knowledge of welding symbols, various welding processes, and capable of certifying in those alloys commonly used in production. Must have developed operator technique to produce uniform welds of high quality. Ability to use measuring equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Read, layout and work from blueprints to determine the proper welding process to be used and the equipment best suited for the specific job. Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining weld shrinkage, and welding techniques. Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together. Bolts, clamps, and tack-welds parts to secure in position for welding. Sets up equipment and welds parts, using arc, gas-shield arc, submerged arc, or gas welding equipment. Sets up gas- or arc-welding equipment and welds metal parts. Turns valves to release fuel gas and oxygen and ignites mixture, or inserts specified weld rod into portable holder, clamps cable onto workpiece or jig, and strikes arc. Guides electrodes, or torch and filler rod, along horizontal weld line at specified speed and angle to melt and deposit metal from filler rod or electrode onto workpiece.
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May assemble parts by bolting and riveting. May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts, using inspection equipment, cutting torch, straightening press, and hand tools. May deburr parts.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED
All types of welding machines and metal cutting machines. Aluminum, carbon steel, and stainless steel. Must provide own welding helmet.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lifts 50 lbs. maximum and/or frequently lifts objects weighing up to 20 lbs., Stooping, bending, handling, reaching required. Stands 65% of day, sits 30%, and walks 5% of day Uses fingers and hands when welding Midrange and close vision required
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Works inside 100%, exposed to shop and equipment noise, exposed to heat from welding equipment. Exposed to hot temperatures in the plant during the summer months, and exposed to colder temperatures in the plant during the winter months.
GENERAL COMMENTS
Good reading, communication, and math skills required. Personal, work and/or school references must indicate dependability, good attendance, and consistent, steady worker, with few or no job related problems. Must reflect positive attitude toward co-workers and customer personnel. Must support and be engaged in AC's quality, environmental, health and safety management system.
