Position Summary All Steel is seeking an experienced structural steel Welder to join our fabrication team. This role is focused on producing high-quality, code-compliant welds on structural steel assemblies, working from shop drawings to fit and finish parts that meet AISC standards. The ideal candidate reads a weld symbol like a second language, takes pride in a clean bead, and keeps quality and productivity moving together on the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities Welding Operation:
Perform structural steel welding using FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, and/or SAW processes as required by the job, in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
Blueprint & Symbol Reading:
Interpret structural shop drawings and AWS weld symbols to determine joint type, weld size, length, and process before starting work.
Quality Control:
Inspect completed welds for size, profile, and defects (undercut, porosity, slag inclusions, etc.) and correct as needed to meet AWS D1.1 and project specifications.
Fit Verification:
Confirm assemblies are properly fit, squared, and dimensionally correct against the drawing before and during welding.
Equipment & Consumable Management:
Set up welding machines, select correct wire/electrode and gas for the material and joint, and maintain equipment to avoid downtime.
Material Handling:
Safely move and position parts and assemblies using overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging as needed.
Routine Maintenance:
Keep welding equipment, work area, and PPE clean and in good working order; report equipment issues promptly.
Cross-Training:
Work across multiple job types and assembly sizes as production needs shift, rather than being tied to a single line or product.
Safety & Organization:
Maintain a clean, professional work area and strictly adhere to all safety protocols and PPE requirements. Qualifications 2+ years of experience welding structural steel in a fabrication shop environment. AWS certification (or ability to pass an in-house weld test) preferred.
Blueprint Literacy:
Strong ability to read and interpret structural shop drawings and AWS weld symbols.
Technical Knowledge:
Solid understanding of welding parameters (amperage, voltage, travel speed, heat input) and how they change with material thickness and joint type.
Precision Mindset:
High attention to detail with a focus on weld quality, consistency, and material conservation.
Physical Capability:
Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work in various positions (including overhead), and work in a high-output shop environment for extended periods.
Reliability:
A track record of punctuality and a commitment to meeting production deadlines.
