About Adams Steel Adams Steel Service & Supply has been fabricating structural steel in the Chicago area since 1960. Operating out of a 60,000 sq ft AWS and AISC certified facility in McHenry, Illinois, we serve residential, commercial, and industrial customers across northern Illinois, Chicagoland, and southern Wisconsin. We specialize in custom structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication built to print, with a reputation for quality work, practical problem solving, and getting the job done right. The Role This is a custom fabrication position at a working structural steel shop. You'll be reading blueprints, setting up machines, fabricating metal components to print, and delivering finished parts that meet spec. Work is varied, no assembly line. What You'll Do Read and interpret engineering blueprints and work orders Set up and operate shears, rollers, drill presses, brakes, and band saws MIG, TIG, and stick weld per spec Fabricate, grind, and finish metal components to print Check completed parts against specifications using measuring tools General shop cleanup and housekeeping
What We're Looking For Required:
Minimum 3 years of hands-on welding and fabrication experience Proficiency with MIG welding; TIG and/or stick Ability to read and work from engineering blueprints and fabrication drawings Experience with shears, rollers, drill presses, brakes, and cold/band saws Strong understanding of squareness, level, and dimensional accuracy in fabrication Reliable, consistent, and accountable, this is a production environment High school diploma or GED This role is not a fit if: You have no blueprint reading experience Your welding background is limited to automotive, hobby, or non-structural work You're looking for a starting-out position Interview Process If invited to interview, come dressed to work. You'll be asked to perform a practical weld test on-site. Bring your own helmet and gloves if you have them. We'll have what you need otherwise. The test involves building a simple structure, keeping it square and level, and grinding outside butt welds seamless and flat. We evaluate weld appearance, dimensional accuracy, and grinding quality. This isn't designed to be difficult. It's designed to confirm you can do the work.
