Full-Time Position Summary We are seeking an experienced structural steel welder to join our shop fabrication team. In this role, you will be responsible for executing high-quality, full-penetration and fillet welds on structural steel members, assemblies, and miscellaneous components in accordance with
AWS D1.1
standards. The ideal candidate has strong blueprint and weld symbol comprehension, takes pride in clean workmanship, and maintains a strict commitment to shop safety. Key Responsibilities Set up, adjust, and operate Dual Shield Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW-G) equipment based on material thickness and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). Read and interpret structural fabrication detail drawings, assembly sheets, and standard AWS weld symbols. Perform welding on structural steel assemblies and components in compliance with AWS Structural Welding code. Perform pre-weld inspections, joint preparation, and post-weld clean-up (slag removal, spatter control, and surface grinding). Verify fit-up tolerances, root openings, and weld sizes using fillet weld gauges and measuring tapes. Safely operate material handling equipment, grinders, and hand tools necessary to complete welding operations. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workstation while complying with all OSHA and company safety standards.
Qualifications & Requirements Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of structural steel welding experience in a manufacturing or fabrication shop environment. Testing /
Certification:
Must be able to successfully pass an
AWS D1.1
Structural Welding Code 2F (horizontal fillet) qualification test using Dual Shield FCAW upon hire.
Blueprint Proficiency:
Proven ability to read structural fabrication drawings and interpret common welding symbols.
Math Skills:
Proficient in basic shop arithmetic, whole numbers, decimals, and fractional measurements (down to 1/16").
Required Personal PPE:
Must provide your own functional welding hood (fixed or auto-darkening), standard steel-toed work boots, and non-flammable/flame-retardant work attire (leather sleeves/jacket, heavy denim, or 100% cotton clothing). Physical Demands & Work Environment Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and maneuver around large structural steel assemblies for extended periods. Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Comfortable working in an active, industrial fabrication shop environment
