Novel Iron Works is an AISC-certified structural steel fabricator and erector serving commercial, institutional, and other construction projects throughout New England. Structural Steel Fitter Our fitters are responsible for laying out, fitting, assembling, and tack welding structural steel members in accordance with shop drawings and fabrication requirements.
Responsibilities include:
Read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, dimensions, piece marks, and weld symbols. Lay out and fit beams, columns, braces, plates, angles, stiffeners, connections, and other structural components. Measure, position, square, level, and align components before tack welding. Verify dimensions, orientation, hole locations, and detail placement against shop drawings. Tack weld components in preparation for final welding. Inspect your own work and correct fitting or dimensional issues before releasing the member to welding or QC. Safely use overhead cranes, rigging, grinders, torches, magnetic drills, and other fabrication equipment. Identify and report drawing discrepancies, missing material, or fabrication concerns before proceeding.
Preferred qualifications:
Previous structural steel fitting or heavy fabrication experience. Strong shop drawing and blueprint-reading ability. Strong measurement, layout, and basic shop-math skills. Tack-welding experience. Crane and rigging experience. Structural Steel Welder Our welders are responsible for completing structural steel welds in accordance with shop drawings, approved welding procedures, applicable AWS requirements, and Novel Iron Works' AISC-certified quality program.
Responsibilities include:
Perform structural steel welding using FCAW and SMAW processes. Weld beams, columns, braces, plates, stiffeners, connections, and other structural components. Read and understand structural steel shop drawings and weld symbols. Follow approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). Complete welds to the required size, length, location, and quality. Verify proper joint preparation and fit-up before welding. Visually inspect your own welds and correct issues before releasing the member for QC. Perform grinding, cleaning, weld preparation, and corrective work as required. Safely operate welding machines, grinders, torches, overhead cranes, and other fabrication equipment.
Preferred qualifications:
Previous structural steel welding or heavy fabrication experience. FCAW and/or SMAW experience. Ability to understand structural steel shop drawings and weld symbols. Knowledge of proper weld preparation and common weld defects. Previous AWS qualifications or welding certifications are preferred. Candidates may be required to demonstrate welding ability and complete company-required qualification testing. Shop Laborer / Fabricator Trainee This is an entry-level opportunity for dependable individuals interested in learning structural steel fabrication. Previous structural steel experience is helpful but is not required for the right candidate.
Responsibilities include:
Assist fitters, welders, machine operators, and material handlers. Grind, clean, deburr, and prepare structural steel components. Move, stage, and organize material throughout the shop. Learn to identify structural steel shapes, plates, piece marks, and detail material. Learn to accurately use a tape measure and common fabrication tools. Safely use grinders, hand tools, and power tools after proper training. Learn proper overhead crane, rigging, and material-handling practices. Assist with loading, unloading, staging, and organizing structural steel. Maintain clean and organized work areas. Participate in training and develop additional fabrication skills. Employees who demonstrate the ability and desire to advance may have opportunities to train in structural steel fitting, welding, machine operation, material handling, quality control, and other skilled fabrication positions. Follow Novel Iron Works' AISC quality requirements and applicable fabrication procedures. Qualifications Experience requirements vary by position. Experienced structural steel fitters and welders are encouraged to apply, but we are also interested in dependable candidates who have mechanical aptitude and are willing to learn the structural steel trade. Applicants should be able to work safely around heavy structural steel, fabrication machinery, welding operations, overhead cranes, and material-handling equipment.
