Job Description

The Baillie Group is a cohesive, unified group of hardwood producers working cooperatively together with each retaining their distinctive and valued cultural identities. Green Lumber, a member of the Baillie Group, is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Welder/Fabricator to join our maintenance team at our hardwood lumber sawmill in Davenport, NY. This position is responsible for welding, fabricating, repairing, and modifying equipment and components used throughout the sawmill to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, experienced in metal fabrication, and thrives in a fast-paced industrial environment.

  • Overtime Hours and Pay Full Plan of Benefits Essential Duties & Responsibilities Perform MIG, stick, and other welding processes to repair and fabricate sawmill equipment and components.
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and work orders to fabricate parts to specification. Fabricate machine guards, conveyors, brackets, chutes, platforms, railings, and structural steel components. Repair cracked, worn, or damaged equipment to minimize production downtime. Cut, grind, fit, and assemble metal components using hand and power tools. Work closely with maintenance personnel to troubleshoot mechanical failures and recommend improvements. Assist with preventative maintenance projects and equipment installations. Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, torches, plasma cutters, and other shop equipment safely and efficiently. Maintain welding equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and organized condition. Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and lockout/tagout procedures. Participate in emergency repairs during production shutdowns as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Previous welding and metal fabrication experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment preferred. Ability to read blueprints and fabricate from drawings or verbal instructions. Experience with MIG, stick, and oxy-fuel cutting equipment required; TIG welding experience is a plus. Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. Ability to safely operate fabrication equipment, grinders, drills, saws, presses, forklifts, and cranes. Basic math and measurement skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must be dependable with a strong commitment to workplace safety. Physical Requirements Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift more with assistance or mechanical devices. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crouch, and reach throughout the workday. Work in varying temperatures, noise levels, dust, and outdoor weather conditions common to a hardwood sawmill. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including welding helmet, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and respiratory protection when required.
