Job Title:
Pipe Welder Job Description This role focuses on performing high-quality multi-pass pipe welds in all positions using SMAW and GTAW processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe. You will interpret blueprints and drawings, plan layouts, and execute precise welds that meet strict specifications and industry standards across a variety of industrial and construction projects. Responsibilities Perform multi-pass fillet and butt welds in all positions using the SMAW process. Fuse inserts and weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe using both SMAW and GTAW processes. Execute mirror welding using SMAW and GTAW processes where required. Set up components for welding according to specifications, including cutting material with powered saws to match measurements. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan layout and welding procedures. Determine the appropriate welding equipment, processes, and methods based on job requirements and materials. Use fillet gauges, butt gauges, and a six-inch scale accurately to verify weld dimensions and tolerances. Operate and control an oxygen/propane heating torch safely for preheating or other heating tasks. Follow OSHA regulations and safety standards related to the shipbuilding and industrial construction environment. Complete and pass computer-based training as required by the job and safety programs. Support shutdowns and other time-sensitive projects by performing high-quality TIG and stick welds under schedule constraints. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition. Collaborate with other trades and team members to complete projects efficiently and to specification. Essential Skills 2-5 years of TIG and stick (SMAW) pipe welding experience. At least three years of experience working with pipe and metals using various techniques including electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment. Proficiency in SMAW (stick) welding for multi-pass fillet and butt welds in all positions. Proficiency in GTAW (TIG) welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe. Ability to perform mirror welding using SMAW and GTAW processes. Ability to pass an SMAW six-inch weld test. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layout and procedures. Skill in determining appropriate welding equipment, consumables, and methods based on material and job requirements. Competence in using fillet gauges, butt gauges, and a six-inch scale accurately. Familiarity with OSHA regulations related to the shipbuilding and industrial construction industries. Ability to complete and pass computer-based training modules related to safety and technical procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working as an industrial pipe welder on construction and shutdown projects. Hands-on experience with 6G pipe welding. Experience welding carbon and stainless steel using TIG and stick processes. Ability to use powered saws and related cutting equipment to prepare material to specified measurements. Comfort working on varied job sites across a regional area, including shipbuilding and industrial environments. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds that meet inspection standards. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role supports industrial and construction projects throughout the Hampton Roads area, including work on large-scale jobs in Norfolk. You will work primarily Monday through Friday from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some Saturday work as project needs require. The work takes place on active construction and shipbuilding-related sites, where adherence to OSHA safety standards and site-specific rules is essential. You will regularly use SMAW and GTAW welding equipment, powered saws, oxygen/propane heating torches, and precision measuring tools such as fillet gauges, butt gauges, and six-inch scales. The environment is hands-on and field-based, requiring appropriate jobsite attire and personal protective equipment suitable for industrial welding and construction settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Suffolk, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
