How the Work Is Organized The Communications Manager reports to the Senior Minister and works closely with the ministry team and Office Administrator. The Communications Committee Chair and Committee provide strategic guidance, institutional knowledge, content ideas, and volunteer support. Ministers, staff, and ministry or program leaders are responsible for providing complete and accurate source information by established deadlines. The Communications Manager edits, shapes, designs, schedules, and publishes that information. The Senior Minister sets final priorities and resolves competing requests when needed. Core Responsibilities Weekly Publications and Communications Workflow
- Create and distribute The Flash e-newsletter and the weekly Sunday-service reminder email.
- Produce the weekly worship bulletin, inserts, and related printed materials, coordinating with the Office Administrator and ministry team to meet content and production deadlines.
- Manage the weekly communications workflow, content calendar, and centralized Communications Request Form.
- Edit submissions for clarity, accuracy, tone, and audience, translating internal church language into accessible and welcoming invitations. Social Media and Content Planning
- Plan, create, and schedule approximately 2-3 posts per week for Instagram and Facebook, including the church page and group as appropriate.
- Maintain a practical rolling content calendar that looks several weeks ahead and reflects worship, church life, events, service, faith formation, and seasonal priorities.
- Create occasional short-form video content, including approachable Instagram Reels.
- Repurpose material from sermons, newsletters, ministry updates, event promotions, photos, and other existing content whenever possible. Website, Event Promotion, and Design
- Keep routine website content current in WordPress, including the homepage, calendar, event pages, alerts, photos, and other timely information.
- Promote priority events across the appropriate mix of email, website, social media, print, and community calendars.
- Use established Canva templates to create and update regular social graphics, flyers, bulletin inserts, banners, and other communications materials. First Congregational Church of Darien | Communications Manager | Page 1
- Help organize the church's photo, video, template, and reusable-asset libraries, and coordinate photography support when needed.
- Maintain a consistent visual identity and editorial voice across print and digital communications.
Additional Opportunities, as Time and Priorities Allow The church would also welcome contributions in the following areas when time and priorities allow. These are not expected every week or at the expense of core responsibilities and could be coordinated with the support of the
Communications Committee:
- Develop welcome or nurture communications for newcomers.
- Share selected church news and events with local media, community organizations, and partners.
- Support occasional paid promotion for major church events.
- Track basic website, email, and social media engagement to inform future planning.
- Coordinate with freelance designers on occasional major seasonal or original creative campaigns. About You You are a creative, practical, and highly organized communicator who enjoys helping people feel connected, informed, and invited.
- Demonstrated communications, marketing, content production, or social media experience, with strong writing, editing, storytelling, and editorial judgment.
- Moderate or stronger Canva proficiency from day one, including the ability to adapt established templates and make sound choices about layout, imagery, color, and copy.
- Experience planning and publishing content for Instagram and Facebook using a content calendar.
- Comfort with Mailchimp, WordPress, and Google Workspace, or comparable platforms, and the ability to become productive quickly.
- Strong organizational and technology skills, with the ability to manage multiple requests and communicate clearly about deadlines and capacity.
- A warm, collaborative approach to working with clergy, staff, volunteers, committee members, and outside creative partners.
- Familiarity with Breeze, Adobe tools, SignUpGenius, Paperless Post, Vimeo, or YouTube is helpful but not required.
Church or nonprofit experience is helpful but not required. No personal religious affiliation
Pay:
Up to $30.00 per hour Expected hours: No more than 15.0 per week
