Yr Position Summary:
The VP of Philanthropy & Communications is part of the senior leadership team (SLT) for Montgomery & Prince George's Hospice and is responsible for strategic planning, organizing, and implementing programs designed to provide annual operating, capital, and endowment support for the organization. In addition to providing strategic guidance to the CEO, SLT and board on philanthropy matters, the VP of Philanthropy and Communications is also responsible for the management of routine operations of the department including developing and monitoring revenue and program goals, managing budget performance, supervising staff, overseeing the planning and execution of fundraising events, directing donor research, and managing the donor stewardship and acknowledgment process. Directs all external communications and outreach efforts, including media relations, marketing communications and community outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Designs, implements and manages a comprehensive revenue generating programs to address the immediate and long-term needs of the organization. Manages the Philanthropy and Communications teams in a manner which defines responsibilities and ensures that the department budgets, goals and objectives are met in an efficient and effective manner. Responsible for hiring, supervising, motivating and coaching Philanthropy and Communications team members. Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards current and prospective donors, including individuals, corporations, community organizations, foundations and government agencies. Oversees the system of prospect identification and evaluation and monitors prospect research to ensure timely dissemination of results. Establishes and manages procedures for securing and recording gifts and acknowledging donors to ensure timely execution and response. Calls donors with gifts of $1,000 or more to cultivate and steward the relationships. Develops and manages the annual department budgets. Tracks progress of fundraising efforts and proposed plans and reports to President/CEO. Serves as staff liaison to the Major Gifts & Philanthropy Committee, being responsible for preparing meeting agendas, taking minutes, assembling talking points and materials as well as follow-up with members, as well as training and coaching members as needed Oversees the grants management process to ensure timely and appropriate submission of grant proposals including researching and drafting proposals as well as the possibility of managing a contract grant writer. Drafts copy for annual and other specialized solicitation appeals and oversees, writes (as needed) and edits all development publication materials including articles for in-house newsletters, special event invitations and brochures, the annual report, planned giving brochures and website materials. Actively seeks opportunities to be involved in the external community to represent the organization, share its mission and cultivate and steward relationships for future support. Coordinates philanthropic activities and programs in concert with other departments including the Business Development Department, integrating stewardship and cultivation efforts in a wide variety of activities. Responsible for the development of collateral materials to build public awareness of hospice care in general and Montgomery Hospice in particular. Responsible for overseeing promotional activities. Oversees the development of content and design to enhance organization's image and standing in the community. Serves as an ex-officio member of the Board Governance Committee to identify potential directors and ensure their understanding of the Board's fundraising responsibilities. Stays abreast of research and best practices in equity and inclusion, particularly among people receiving Hospice services, and infuse/adapt it to MHI culture and practice. Develops communication system to share best practices, highlight bright spots, and keep staff apprised of key initiatives and activities, and build a culture of philanthropy across the organization. Ensures the necessary dialogue is continually strengthening a safe, open, collaborative, and inclusive culture that fuels fresh ideas, challenges thinking, and empowers people so they can do their best work. All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in related field required; master's degree preferred. Must possess a proven track record in developing and managing fundraising programs including supervisory experience in philanthropy, event planning, grant writing, prospect research, planned giving, donor cultivation and stewardship, and marketing of non-profit organizations. Minimum of eight years of progressive philanthropy experience with a minimum of five years leading teams to raise annual, capital, corporate, foundation and planned giving support. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to develop and achieve short- and long-term goals, identify and resolve complex issues, pay strict attention to detail, and handle multiple priorities. First-hand experience with the identification, cultivation, solicitation and closure of major gifts of $25,000+. Solid interpersonal and relationship-building skills to effectively interface with internal and external constituencies including staff, Board, volunteers, donors and prospects. Computer literacy required, including experience with database management software programs. Experience with Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge preferred. Demonstrated understanding of fundraising profession best practices and ethical standards, with a CFRE designation preferred. Must be available for evening hours and weekends to support organizational events.
