The purpose of this job is to supervise and lead Citywide media relations, communication strategies, digital storytelling, and internal communications strategies.

Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees (2 or more full-time employees) including providing input on hiring, issuing formal discipline, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. Such authority is not merely of a routine or clerical nature but requires the use of independent judgment.

Essential Duties:
  • Oversees and assists with the development and execution of Citywide media and communications strategies.
  • Develops relationships with news media covering the City, organizes press conferences, and directs the development and distribution of press releases and advisories.
  • Leads Citywide internal communications efforts.
  • Directs communications and public information efforts for major Citywide initiatives, projects, events, and public information campaigns.

Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries; and acts as liaison between employees and management.

Works with City departments to proactively develop and communications strategies that support Citywide priorities.

Promotes and ensures adherence to Citywide communications, brand, editorial, Associated Press (AP) style, and professional standards; reviews public-facing content for consistency, accuracy, quality, and alignment with City standards.

Conducts research, collects, and analyzes data.

Creates and presents reports.

Creates and conducts training.

Assists with special projects as needed.

Ensures communication plans and deadlines are met.

Identifies, evaluates, and recommends new communications channels and strategies and evaluates their effectiveness.

Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Performs other duties as assigned. Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.

3 to 5 years experience in communications, marketing, graphic design, public relations or a related field.

Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

Valid drivers license.

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of public and governmental communications, public information, media relations, and internal communications.

Emerging digital and social media platforms and technologies.

AP style, grammar, punctuation, and professional writing and editing standards.

General office practices and administrative procedures, records management, and administration techniques and procedures.

Skill in:

Planning, developing, and implementing communications strategies.

Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.

Monitoring and assessing the performance of employees to make improvements or take corrective action.

Using content management, social media, and other digital communications tools and technologies.

Organizing and managing time effectively.

Collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

Ability to:

Anticipate communications needs and proactively identify potential issues, risks, and opportunities.

Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

Lead a team and project(s) from initial concept through final closeout.

Create and present reports.

Handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

Effectively plan and delegate the work of others and to train and supervise the work of others.

Perform interviews on camera.

Write and edit content.

Multitask and prioritize projects.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Regularly use a computer, software, phone and related office equipment.

Focus on tasks.
