Job Description

5 Lakes Energy 5 Lakes Energy is a public interest consulting firm specializing in policy and technical research, and regulatory advocacy to mitigate climate change. Our reputation is built upon thought leadership and extensive expertise and influence in clean and advanced energy, rate fairness and affordability, reliable and efficient infrastructure, and active and informed citizens and decision-makers. We are a small firm based in Michigan that provides services nationwide, but mostly in the Midwest. We are passionate about a clean environment, combating climate change, and fostering a fair and equitable provision of energy services. Position Description Communications Manager 5 Lakes Energy is looking for an experienced communications professional, preferably with a strong background in climate and energy. This person will manage both 5 Lakes Energy's communications and provide communications services to certain 5 Lakes Energy clients and report to the Director of Operations and Project Management. The ideal candidate must be nimble, thrive in an "all hands-on deck" environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and operate independently in a virtual environment. We have a strong preference for a candidate based in either Michigan or Wisconsin, but we will make an exception for the best candidate. Responsibilities Manage copy editing and communications services for a few reports per year written by 5 Lakes Energy for clients. Manage 5 Lakes Energy's website (5lakesenergy.com), LinkedIn presence, and potentially 5 Lakes Energy's presence on other social media Write weekly email newsletters, monthly op-eds, and potentially monthly blog posts for one energy trade association that is a 5 Lakes Energy client. Assist the client in placement of the op-eds and in pitching related interviews of the client's leadership. Write a summary of the results of each utility regulatory case in which 5 Lakes Energy provides expert witness services, for publication on 5 Lakes Energy's website and for use by the client in publicizing their role in the case. Manage press inquiries for a residential utility advocacy organization that is a 5 Lakes Energy client. Write monthly newsletters on MISO activities and proceedings for an audience of Midwest state policymakers. Assist with 5 Lakes Energy's business development by compiling materials for and editing proposals. Perform traditional "reporting" of information related to 5 Lakes Energy's work to obtain and document information that 5 Lakes Energy may then use in policy advocacy, preparing reports, expert testimony, and other ways. Qualifications You should have demonstrable knowledge, skills, and/or experience as follows: Writing articles, reports, and memos. Understanding and the ability to articulate information about energy, utility rates, economics, climate, and related matters in lay terms based on knowledge of experts. Developing relationships with reporters and editors. Delivering content through a website and social media. Tracking events and identifying topics for newsletters Preparing and distributing email newsletters Distilling and communicating complex information in succinct ways that maximize impact on the political environment. An ability to work independently. Our staff works remotely. We collaborate and support each other, but each of us is responsible for creating and executing our own plans without much supervision. Location 5 Lakes Energy is a fully remote workplace. We have a strong preference for candidates based in either Michigan or Wisconsin. Most of our team is based in Michigan and the Midwest, but candidates from all locations are welcome to apply. However, we operate on Eastern time. We maintain no primary office, but attending occasional in-person events and other travel may be required.
