Position Summary:
With a consistent voice, the communications specialist supports the goals of the university's central marketing initiatives and development of unit social media. The Communications Specialist develops, writes and edits content that strengthens the unit's identity and brand. This position coordinates the project administration of a wide spectrum of unit marketing initiatives with primary focus on identity building, integrated marketing and serving clients within the unit. Project administration may include planning and facilitating special events, coordinating photo and video shoots and developing timelines. This position requires exceptional promotional writing and editing skills, and knowledge of marketing communications and techniques, a solid understanding of social media, strong organization and project management skills, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with people.
Job Duties:
Campus (Internal) Communication (40%) Project management of printed materials including production, graphic design, copywriting, and distribution. Maintain and update current College and departmental websites. Create or coordinate digital assets such as video, images, and written content. Produce regular and special internal communications such as newsletters and student communications, create and distribute posters for events, and manage digital message boards. External Communication 35%) Develop, conceptualize, research, write, and edit promotional and task-based information for unit publications and web content within the strategic communication guidance from
University Advancement:
ensuring a consistent university voice, tone, and messaging. Collaborate with UNC communications, graphic designers, and web developers. Manage social media accounts and editorial calendar for regular posting on blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and others. Write, revise, or edit print or web content provided by campus and unit stakeholders and as needed by the University Advancement team. Work with the creative team to develop and write scripts for advertising, marketing, and storytelling videos. Assist Enrollment Management with developing unit-specific messaging and marketing for prospective students and parents. Events (20%) Plan and coordinate photo and video shoots with university videographer and photographer. Produce print materials for events including event programs, invitations & RSVPs, posters, advertisements, and others as needed to promote College events and programs. Schedule large meetings for the college/unit. Manage the college/unit calendar entries and updates. Other Duties as Assigned (5%) Work with the Academic Affairs Communications Team to develop policies and procedures, align efforts across units, and work as a team to advance Academic Affairs at UNC. Work with the college/unit ASC Team to accomplish/complete ASC duties in alignment with other units, the Division of Academic Affairs, and UNC. Other duties as assigned by Dean and Associate Dean.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in performing or visual arts, marketing, communications, humanities or a related discipline. Master's degree preferred. Two years work experience in a communications-related field. Experience in the arts and higher education preferred. Perform difficult, complex, timely and detailed clerical and administrative work with accuracy Analyze situations accurately and take appropriate action Identify problems and recommend sound solutions Communicate effectively in English both written and spoken Follow and give oral and written directions Perform mathematical calculations with accuracy Work independently with minimal supervision Interpret, apply and initiate University and IM&T policies and procedures Maintain a cooperative working relationship with others Interact with the public in helpful, courteous and friendly manner Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for a diverse population Organize information accurately & quickly Able to work with multiple interruptions Special Considerations Modern office methods and practices including basic fiscal management Basic skill set in graphic design, creating marketing materials, photography, video and/or audio production, and website design/updating Personal computer software program including word processing, spreadsheet, workflow tools, electronic markup,
