This position will serve as a key member of the communications and outreach function, creating engaging, professional, and mission-driven content that increases awareness of Head Start services, strengthens relationships with families and community partners, highlights program accomplishments, supports recruitment and enrollment efforts, and promotes the organization's overall mission and impact. The Social Media Coordinator will work closely with program leadership, center directors, family services staff, education staff, community partners, and other departments to gather stories and content from multiple locations while maintaining a consistent organizational voice, visual identity, and professional standard. This position requires strong writing, photography/video, social media management, organizational, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, geographically dispersed organization.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Media Management Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with organizational goals and Head Start priorities. Manage the organization's official social media platforms, including content planning, scheduling, publishing, monitoring, and engagement. Create and maintain an editorial/content calendar that coordinates activities and messaging across multiple program locations. Produce content that highlights program services, classroom activities, family engagement, staff accomplishments, community partnerships, special events, and organizational milestones. Monitor comments, messages, mentions, and other forms of audience engagement and respond appropriately in accordance with organizational policies. Identify opportunities to increase audience engagement, community awareness, enrollment interest, and overall digital presence. Stay current with social media trends, platform updates, best practices, accessibility considerations, and emerging digital communication tools. Content Creation Write compelling, accurate, and audience-appropriate captions, announcements, articles, and other digital communications. Photograph and record video at Head Start centers, events, trainings, community activities, and other approved program activities. Create graphics, flyers, digital announcements, short-form videos, reels, stories, and other visual content using appropriate design and editing tools. Develop content that effectively communicates the impact of Head Start while protecting the privacy, dignity, and confidentiality of children and families. Coordinate with staff at individual locations to collect photographs, videos, success stories, testimonials, announcements, and other approved content. Maintain an organized library of approved photographs, videos, graphics, logos, templates, and other digital assets. Multi-Location Coordination Serve as the central social media resource for the organization's multiple Head Start locations. Establish clear procedures for submitting content from centers and departments. Coordinate with designated staff at each location to ensure consistent, timely, and accurate information. Travel to program locations throughout the service area, including locations in Alabama, as needed to capture content and support communications initiatives. Ensure individual centers and departments are appropriately represented while maintaining a unified organizational brand. Develop systems for obtaining required permissions, approvals, photographs, stories, and event information. Communications and Marketing Support organizational communications, public awareness, community outreach, enrollment campaigns, recruitment initiatives, and special events. Assist with the development of digital campaigns designed to increase awareness of Head Start and encourage eligible families to apply or enroll. Promote employment opportunities and employee recruitment efforts through appropriate digital channels. Highlight organizational accomplishments, community partnerships, employee recognition, and positive outcomes. Assist with newsletters, website content, email communications, digital signage, presentations, and other communications projects as assigned. Collaborate with leadership to develop messaging for organizational announcements and special initiatives. Ensure public-facing communications are professional, accurate, inclusive, and consistent with organizational policies and branding. Brand Management Maintain consistency in the organization's visual identity, tone, messaging, logos, colors, photography, and other brand elements across social media and digital communications. Develop and maintain social media templates and content standards for use across multiple locations. Review submitted content for quality, accuracy, appropriateness, and alignment with organizational standards before publication. Help ensure that all public-facing content reflects the professionalism and mission of the Head Start program. Compliance, Privacy, and Risk Management Follow all applicable Head Start regulations, organizational policies, confidentiality requirements, and media/social media policies. Protect the privacy and confidentiality of children, families, and employees. Ensure appropriate photo/video releases and permissions are obtained before publishing identifiable images or information. Exercise sound judgment when determining what information is appropriate for public dissemination. Immediately escalate sensitive, controversial, or potentially damaging social media issues to appropriate leadership. Follow established procedures for crisis communications and emergency announcements. Maintain appropriate boundaries when interacting with families, children, employees, and community members through social media. Analytics and Reporting Monitor social media performance and audience engagement across platforms. Track key performance indicators such as reach, engagement, audience growth, website traffic, campaign performance, and other relevant metrics. Prepare regular social media and digital communications reports for leadership. Use analytics and audience insights to improve content strategy and engagement. Evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and make recommendations for improvement. Collaboration and Special Projects Work collaboratively with leadership and departments including Education, Family Services, Health, Nutrition, Disabilities, Human Resources, Enrollment, Community Partnerships, and Operations. Attend organizational meetings and events as appropriate. Support special events, conferences, trainings, enrollment activities, job fairs, celebrations, and community outreach events. Develop communications materials for organizational initiatives and campaigns. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications Required :
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Digital Media, Social Media Management, or a related field preferred. Demonstrated experience managing professional social media accounts for an organization, nonprofit, educational institution, government agency, or comparable entity. Strong knowledge of major social media platforms and their respective content formats and audiences. Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to create high-quality digital content, including photography, video, graphics, and short-form video. Experience with social media scheduling, analytics, and content management tools. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, locations, deadlines, and priorities. Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with staff at all organizational levels. Ability to travel to multiple program locations as required. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, as required by the position. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
