Job Description

Job Title:
School Communications Specialist Location:
Brentwood, NY Job Type:
Full-Time, On-Site Starting Salary:
$70,000 Long Island-based school communications firm is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist to work on-site in the Brentwood Union Free School District. The new hire will work alongside the district's current Communications Specialist, creating a two-person communications team. The Communications Specialist will be employed by the communications firm — not the school district — and will report to the district office each day. The two specialists will collaborate to create timely, engaging content highlighting district programs, events, students and staff across websites, social media, print and digital publications, press releases and videos. This position is well suited for a creative, organized communications professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and can independently identify and develop compelling content. Key Responsibilities Attend school programs, meetings and special events to gather information, take photographs and produce written and visual content. Provide real-time and same-day social media coverage of district activities, including major events and special projects. Create engaging social media content, including reels and targeted short-form videos highlighting district programs, student experiences and monthly themes. Write press releases, website stories, social media posts and content for print and digital publications. Photograph district events and record and edit short-form video content for websites and social media. Maintain a content calendar and coordinate coverage across multiple schools, programs and departments. Publish daily content and make basic updates to the district website and social media platforms; training for web updates will be provided. Track social media analytics, identify successful content and recommend opportunities to improve audience engagement. Research emerging social media trends and suggest appropriate ways to incorporate them into district communications. Maintain regular contact with administrators and school personnel to identify stories, coordinate event coverage and support ongoing communications projects. Help ensure that district communications are accurate, consistent and aligned with district priorities. Collaborate with the other Communications Specialist and the employer's media, web, graphic design and video teams. Assist with media relations, crisis communications and other time-sensitive communications as needed. Attend Board of Education meetings and other evening or weekend events as assigned. Coverage typically does not exceed one evening event per week and two weekend events per month. Protect confidential student and staff information and exercise sound professional judgment. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field. Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills. Strong working knowledge of social media platforms, particularly Instagram and Facebook. Ability to take quality photographs and create short-form video content. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines. Self-motivated, dependable and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with administrators, staff, students and families. Availability to cover assigned evening and weekend events. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel among district buildings and events. Preferred Qualifications Professional experience in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or social media management. Experience working in a school district, educational organization or community-based setting. Experience using a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Experience creating reels and editing short-form videos. Familiarity with website content management systems, social media analytics and graphic design platforms such as Canva. Compensation and Benefits Starting salary of $70,000. Full medical benefits. Retirement benefits and company profit sharing. 15 paid time off days. 16 or more paid holidays annually. Paid parental leave and New York State Paid Family Leave. Annual performance reviews.
