910 Media Group and media researchers at Northeastern University's School of Journalism and Media Innovation are partnering on a project aimed at engaging younger audiences on digital platforms. We are seeking early-career video storytellers to apply for a one-year funded fellowship in 2027. The fellow will work with the 910 Media Group team in Traverse City to produce local stories for Northern Michigan audiences. We hope to strengthen the communities we serve with high-quality video journalism that meets the needs of modern news consumers. The fellowship is supported by the Stanton Foundation and Northeastern University. Northeastern's Reinventing Local TV News Project began in 2017 and has since completed three research phases. In Phase I, the research team conducted a national survey that revealed strong interest in local news, while identifying a need for more engaging content. In Phase II, the team added advanced animation and graphics to newscasts and found that these innovations increased audience interest and comprehension. Phase III tested the Digital Content Creator role in three newsrooms and explored how prioritizing digital content can increase engagement.

Responsibilities:

Conceptualize, plan, and produce high-quality video news stories for streaming and digital platforms including YouTube, TikTok, and InstagramShoot and edit video footage for digital platforms using professional cameras and editing software, ensuring excellent image and sound qualityConduct thorough research and gather relevant information to develop compelling storylines and scriptsWrite clear, concise, and engaging scripts that effectively convey news and information to viewersCollaborate closely with the news team to gather video assets, interviews, and other necessary contentCommunicate with the Northeastern research team regularly about their role and experience as a Digital Content CreatorUnderstand and interpret performance data and analytics and make creative decisions based on high-performing content and community needs

Qualifications:

Proven experience as a video news producer, preferably in a newsroom or digital media environmentStrong proficiency in shooting with professional cameras, lighting, and audio equipmentStrong proficiency in video editing software Adobe Premiere ProExcellent writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and engaging mannerKnowledge of social media and digital streaming platforms, including best practices for video content distributionFamiliarity with graphic design, motion graphics, and/or animation software is a plusAbility to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines without compromising qualityStrong attention to detail and a keen eye for visual aestheticsExcellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within a team environmentA creative mindset and the ability to generate fresh ideas and concepts for video contentStrong organizational and time management skillsComfort working in a newly created role and eagerness to help define the future of newsA willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment Life in Traverse City This position is based primarily in our Traverse City newsroom. Located on Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City offers beaches and waterfront activities alongside a lively downtown with restaurants, shops, and community events. Trails run through the area, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is nearby. The seasons bring different ways to explore Northern Michigan, from kayaking and biking in summer to fall color and winter sports. Candidates should be based in the area or willing to relocate.
