Job Description

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) provides protection to consumers and services to businesses engaged in financial transactions. The department regulates a variety of financial services, products and professionals. The department oversees the operations of state-licensed financial institutions, including banks, credit unions, money transmitters, issuers of payment instruments and travelers checks, and premium finance companies. Additionally, the department licenses and regulates a variety of financial businesses, including securities brokers and dealers, investment advisers, deferred deposit (commonly known as payday loans) and certain fiduciaries and lenders. The department regulates the offer and sale of securities, franchises and off-exchange commodities. For the complete list, see the department's licensees page. The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) is seeking to hire a creative, proactive, and detail-oriented Student Assistant to support the Department's digital communications efforts under the general supervision of the Office of Public Affairs. The Student Assistant will help develop engaging, accessible, and timely content that informs Californians about consumer protections, fraud and scams, financial education resources, Department programs, and other topics relevant to DFPI's mission. Responsibilities may include researching content topics, drafting social media posts, creating or coordinating visual assets, and identifying emerging trends and opportunities for public engagement. The ideal candidate is a strong writer who understands how to communicate complex information clearly and concisely for different audiences and platforms. The candidate should also demonstrate creativity, sound judgment, attention to detail, and an interest in public service, consumer protection, communications, or digital media. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a college student to gain firsthand experience in government communications, social media strategy, public affairs, and financial consumer protection in a flexible and dynamic work environment. The Student Assistant must be based in or near one of our DFPI office locations: Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, or San Diego. While this position offers flexibility to work remotely, occasional in-office attendance may be required based on business needs. Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance to one of these offices. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
Strong Communication Skills:
Ability to develop clear, concise, accurate, and engaging written content for a variety of audiences and communication channels.
Digital and Social Media Proficiency:
Familiarity with major social media platforms and an understanding of how content, tone, length, and presentation may vary across digital channels and audiences. Attention to
Detail:
Ability to review content for grammar, accuracy, consistency, accessibility, formatting, and alignment with established messaging and brand standards.
Organizational Skills:
Ability to manage multiple assignments, track deadlines, maintain content and editorial calendars, and prioritize work effectively.
Microsoft Office Proficiency:
Experience using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or comparable programs to draft documents, organize information, and prepare communications materials.
Team Collaboration:
Ability to work effectively with colleagues, receive and incorporate feedback, communicate progress, and contribute to shared projects. Preferred Qualifications Experience drafting or developing content for social media, websites, newsletters, internal communications, blogs, student organizations, or other digital platforms. Familiarity with social media management, scheduling, content management, or digital communications tools. Experience developing basic graphics or visual content using Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, or similar design tools. Experience creating or supporting short-form video, graphics, captions, scripts, presentations, or other multimedia content. Knowledge of accessibility practices, plain-language principles, or inclusive communications. Interest in consumer protection, financial education, communications, public policy, government, or public service. Duties and Responsibilities Research, draft, edit, and format social media content that supports DFPI's public education, consumer protection, outreach, and awareness efforts. Adapt content for different platforms, audiences, and communication needs. Assist with developing, editing, or coordinating graphics, short-form videos, presentation materials, photographs, captions, scripts, and other visual or multimedia content. Identify relevant social media trends, public conversations, observances, news developments, and emerging communications practices that may help DFPI effectively reach and engage its audiences. Review draft communications for spelling, grammar, readability, accuracy, accessibility, formatting, link functionality, and consistency with DFPI messaging and style standards. Assist with internal communications, including employee announcements, newsletters, intranet or internal web content, presentations, event communications, and other materials designed to inform and engage DFPI employees. Provide support for website content, newsletters, public education materials, outreach campaigns, events, presentations, and other Office of Public Affairs communications projects as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned. While this position offers flexibility to work remotely, occasional in-office attendance may be required based on business needs.
