Job Description

The Reno Phil seeks a strategic, creative, and results-driven Director of Marketing to lead the organization's marketing efforts with a primary focus on revenue generation, audience growth, and creative excellence. Reporting to the Chief Development & Marketing Officer, the Director of Marketing is responsible for developing and executing integrated marketing strategies that drive ticket sales, increase attendance, strengthen patron loyalty, and expand the Reno Phil's reach throughout Northern Nevada. The Director will translate artistic programming and organizational priorities into compelling campaigns that connect audiences with the Reno Phil and inspire them to attend, engage, and return. This is both a strategic and creative leadership role. The Director of Marketing will set the creative vision and strategic direction for marketing campaigns while overseeing day-to-day execution by the Marketing Manager and external vendors and partners. The successful candidate will bring a sophisticated understanding of audience behavior, digital marketing, storytelling, brand expression, and revenue strategy, balanced with the ability to use data and analytics to make informed decisions. The Director of Marketing will serve as a key member of the Reno Phil's leadership team and collaborate closely with Artistic, Development, Education & Community Engagement, Operations, Finance, and Executive leadership. Responsibilities Marketing Strategy & Revenue Generation
  • Develop and execute comprehensive annual marketing strategies designed to achieve or exceed ticket revenue, attendance, subscription, and other earned-income goals.
  • Lead marketing strategy for the Reno Phil's full range of programming, including Classix, Pops, special events, family concerts, education programs, fundraising and other performances and initiatives.
  • Develop strategies for subscription, single-ticket, group, and other ticket sales, including pricing, packaging, promotions, and audience-specific offers.
  • Monitor sales pacing and campaign performance and adjust strategies as needed to maximize revenue and attendance.
  • Establish measurable marketing goals and key performance indicators and regularly evaluate results against those goals.
  • Manage the marketing budget and evaluate return on investment across paid and owned marketing channels.
  • Use audience, ticketing, CRM, and market data to identify opportunities for revenue growth and improve marketing effectiveness.
  • Partner with the Chief Development & Marketing Officer and organizational leadership on revenue forecasting, season goals, pricing strategy, and long-term audience and revenue planning. Audience Development & Growth
  • Develop and implement strategies to grow, diversify, and retain Reno Phil audiences.
  • Identify emerging audience segments and develop targeted strategies to introduce new audiences to the Reno Phil.
  • Use audience segmentation, customer behavior, ticketing data, and market research to develop relevant and effective campaigns.
  • Develop strategies that move patrons from first-time attendance toward repeat attendance, subscription, membership, and long-term engagement.
  • Collaborate with Education & Community Engagement and Development to identify opportunities to connect new and existing audiences with the broader work of the Reno Phil.
  • Monitor audience trends and identify opportunities to reduce barriers to attendance and increase the accessibility and relevance of the Reno Phil to the community.
  • Develop and maintain strategies that support audience loyalty and lifetime patron value. Creative Direction & Brand Stewardship
  • Establish the creative vision for Reno Phil marketing campaigns, ensuring work is distinctive, compelling, contemporary, and reflective of the quality of the orchestra.
  • Translate artistic programming into creative concepts and marketing messages that are accessible and meaningful to target audiences.
  • Provide creative direction for campaign photography, video, digital advertising, social media, print materials, email, website content, and other audience-facing communications.
  • Oversee the development of compelling campaign copy and visual assets in collaboration with the Marketing Manager, internal staff, designers, photographers, videographers, and external partners.
  • Serve as a steward of the Reno Phil's established brand and ensure consistency across audience touchpoints.
  • Elevate the visual and creative expression of the existing Reno Phil brand while maintaining established brand components and standards.
  • Ensure marketing materials communicate the Reno Phil's artistic excellence, innovation, community relevance, and distinctive personality. Communications, Public Relations & Storytelling
  • Develop compelling narratives that communicate the relevance and impact of the Reno Phil to existing and prospective audiences.
  • Oversee public-facing communications, including press releases, media outreach, institutional announcements, concert messaging, newsletters, and other communications.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local and regional media and community partners.
  • Identify opportunities for musician, guest artist, composer, conductor, and community storytelling that deepen audience connection.
  • Work with the Chief Development & Marketing Officer and Executive and Artistic leadership on messaging for significant organizational announcements and initiatives.
  • Ensure consistency and strategic alignment across marketing, communications, and public relations. Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and support the Marketing Manager in achieving departmental and organizational goals.
  • Establish clear priorities, expectations, workflows, and performance goals for the marketing team.
  • Provide creative direction and strategic guidance while empowering staff to take ownership of execution.
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative, accountable, and solutions-oriented marketing culture.
  • Manage relationships with external marketing team, advertising, design, public relations, digital, print, photography, video, and other vendors.
  • Evaluate vendor performance and ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to a high creative standard.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure marketing strategies support broader organizational objectives. Strategic Planning & Organizational Collaboration
  • Serve as a strategic marketing partner to the Chief Development & Marketing Officer and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Music Director, artistic staff, and programming leadership to understand programming priorities and develop effective audience strategies.
  • Participate in season planning and provide marketing, audience, and market insights to inform programming and organizational decisions.
  • Collaborate with Development to align audience communications and fundraising messaging while maintaining appropriate distinctions between earned and contributed revenue strategies.
  • Provide regular reports and analysis on marketing performance, ticket sales, audience growth, campaign results, and return on investment.
  • Represent the marketing department in organizational planning and cross-departmental initiatives. Community Presence
  • Serve as an active and visible representative of the Reno Phil within the Northern Nevada community.
  • Develop relationships with community organizations, businesses, media, cultural institutions, and other potential audience partners.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships that increase awareness, audience reach, and community engagement.
  • Attend Reno Phil concerts, events, community activities, and other functions, including evenings and weekends as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, arts administration, business, or a related field preferred.
  • 5-7+ years of progressive marketing experience, preferably within the performing arts, nonprofit, entertainment, cultural, or hospitality sectors.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing marketing strategies that drive revenue and measurable audience growth.
  • Proven experience developing successful ticket sales, subscription, or other earned-revenue campaigns.
  • Strong understanding of audience development, segmentation, patron acquisition, retention, and customer lifetime value.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance creative thinking with data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing, paid media, email marketing, social media, SEO, analytics, and website strategy.
  • Experience with CRM and ticketing systems; experience with PatronManager/Salesforce and Feathr preferred.
  • Strong creative instincts and demonstrated ability to develop compelling marketing concepts and storytelling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write or edit compelling audience-facing copy.
  • Experience managing marketing budgets and evaluating return on investment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop staff.
  • Experience managing outside agencies, contractors, vendors, and creative partners.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with artistic, administrative, and development professionals.
  • Highly organized, resourceful, entrepreneurial, and solutions-oriented.

Compensation & Benefits Competitive Salary Annual salary range: $75,000 - $78,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
