Job Description

About the Role PocketLab is looking for a hands-on Lifecycle Marketing Manager to help us turn a large and highly engaged educator audience into deeper relationships, product engagement and customers. This is a role for someone who likes both thinking and doing. You'll develop lifecycle and email strategies, but you'll also write the emails, build the HubSpot workflows, create the segments, test the campaigns, analyze the results and improve the next iteration. PocketLab is not a conventional EdTech company. We design and manufacture science hardware, develop software used by millions of students, work with curriculum and content partners ranging from small independent publishers to major education companies, and sell into K-12 schools, higher education, homeschool and international markets. We also operate Science is Cool (ScIC), a large virtual science education event series that can attract tens of thousands of educators to an individual event. ScIC creates significant top-of-funnel awareness for PocketLab and gives us unusually rich first-party data about the educators we reach. The opportunity for this role is to make much better use of that audience. What You'll Own Lifecycle and Email Marketing Develop and execute the communication journey from initial awareness through engagement, product discovery, sales interest and ongoing customer relationships.
This includes:
Email campaigns and automated nurture sequences Audience segmentation Campaign pacing and contact strategy Copywriting and editing Calls to action A/B testing Reporting and optimization Re-engagement programs List health and deliverability Science is Cool Own the email lifecycle surrounding Science is Cool events. Our event audiences include existing customers and advocates, educators already familiar with PocketLab, and large numbers of new educators who may know little or nothing about our products. You'll develop different pre- and post-event journeys for those audiences rather than treating them as a single list. Registration data includes institutional email addresses and information such as grade level, subject and role, giving us substantial opportunities for intelligent segmentation. HubSpot Be an advanced, hands-on HubSpot marketing user. You'll independently build and manage: Emails Lists and segmentation Automated workflows Lead nurturing Contact management Testing Campaign reporting You'll work alongside an existing HubSpot technical expert who can support more complex architecture, integrations and technical issues. AI in Education Newsletter Take ownership of our weekly AI in Education newsletter. The newsletter has grown to approximately 10,000 subscribers in its first year and regularly achieves open rates above 40%. Your job is to maintain the editorial quality and trust that have driven that engagement while thoughtfully connecting the audience to PocketLab. SDR and Sales Coordination Help determine which contacts warrant more personalized 1:1 outreach and when. We have separate people executing SDR activity. You'll help develop the segmentation, messaging, timing and workflows that coordinate personal outreach with broader marketing communications. CRM and Audience Strategy We currently have approximately 100,000 active marketing contacts and another 150,000 non-marketing contacts. You'll help us become considerably more sophisticated about: Contact aging Re-engagement Data enrichment Duplicate and stale records Engagement scoring Audience segmentation Marketing-contact strategy Integrated Campaigns Email does not operate by itself. You'll work with the rest of the team to coordinate email with Science is Cool, social media, website content, podcasts, webinars, product launches, educator resources and sales activity. Measurement and Experimentation We expect marketing decisions to be informed by evidence. You'll continually test subject lines, messaging, offers, calls to action, segmentation, send timing and campaign structure. We care about opens and clicks, but ultimately want to understand which activities create meaningful engagement, sales opportunities and revenue. Who You'll Work With PocketLab operates with an unusually small marketing and sales team relative to the audience and business it supports.
Existing capabilities include:
Event management and production Paid social advertising HubSpot technical administration and landing pages Graphic design Social media Video and podcast production SDR execution Sales You'll work closely with these people rather than replacing their expertise. You'll also work directly with PocketLab's co-founder and CEO, who is deeply involved in marketing strategy. This is a founder-led environment. We value rigorous thinking, experimentation, strong opinions supported by evidence, and the willingness to change direction when the evidence says we should. What We're Looking For Ideally, you have approximately 4-6 years of relevant experience in lifecycle, email, demand generation or digital marketing. More important than years or titles, we're looking for someone who can demonstrate: Strong hands-on HubSpot experience Excellent email copywriting and editing Sophisticated audience segmentation Experience building automated nurture campaigns Strong analytical and testing skills Understanding of deliverability and list health Excellent campaign execution and quality control Good judgment managing multiple simultaneous campaigns High attention to detail Ability to operate independently Intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn Comfort challenging assumptions — including your own Ability to adapt previous experience rather than simply repeat an old playbook Experience in education, EdTech, science, B2B marketing or another complex, relationship-driven market is helpful but not required. Basic familiarity with Canva or Adobe tools is useful, but this is not a graphic design position. The Working Style We're Looking For You should enjoy working in a small company where problems rarely fit neatly into someone's job description.
You should be comfortable saying:
"I don't know yet. Let's figure it out, test it and see what the data tells us." We're less interested in someone who already has all the answers than someone who asks excellent questions, learns quickly, executes carefully and gets better every cycle. This is an individual-contributor role. You will have significant ownership, but you will also do the actual work. The position is in-person and could be structured initially as approximately half-time or as a full-time role depending on the candidate.
