Coalcracker is building something unusual. We're developing a premium outdoor gear brand while simultaneously building our own American manufacturing operation. We design products, build prototypes, manufacture gear, test it in the field, work with outside brands, solve production problems, and continually figure out how to make the next thing better. There's a massive story happening here. We need someone whose job is to capture it. We're looking for a Content Producer / Documentary Filmmaker who can embed themselves in the company and document what is actually happening—not manufacture fake moments for the camera. You will work closely with Dan, the owner of Coalcracker, and become the person responsible for making sure the interesting things happening inside this company don't go undocumented.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Your primary responsibility is to capture and develop stories from real life at Coalcracker.
You'll:
Follow product development from idea through prototype, manufacturing, testing and launch Document the growth of our manufacturing operation Capture spontaneous moments, problems, breakthroughs and decisions Film Dan working, thinking, testing and building Film products being designed and manufactured Capture outdoor testing and field use Conduct informal interviews and conversations Recognize when something happening in the moment could become a story Organize and maintain a usable library of footage Develop long-form YouTube stories from accumulated footage Produce short-form content from the same material Work with Dan to develop compelling titles, thumbnails and story concepts Help establish a repeatable Coalcracker content system
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS JOB
You have to know when something is a story. Dan is not going to walk around saying: "This is a great YouTube moment." He's running the company. You need to recognize it yourself. If a prototype fails, you notice. If a major decision gets made, you notice. If Dan walks into the factory and discovers something completely unexpected, you notice. If a product finally works after six weeks of development, you notice. If something goes completely sideways, you don't put the camera down—you get closer. You're not just a camera operator. You're a storyteller embedded in the business.
WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR
We're not looking for someone who simply wants to: Shoot pretty B-roll Make cinematic montages Operate cameras while waiting for direction Make generic outdoor videos Chase trends Turn everything into a scripted influencer production Constantly interrupt the work to "create content" We're looking for someone who understands that the real world is the content.
THE IDEAL PERSON
You are: An excellent visual storyteller Comfortable filming documentary-style Naturally curious Observant Comfortable around people Comfortable in a factory and in the woods Able to operate independently Able to recognize compelling moments without being told Comfortable interviewing people conversationally A strong editor Fast enough to keep up with a rapidly changing environment Interested in products, manufacturing, outdoors and entrepreneurship Comfortable with imperfect footage when authenticity matters more than polish Outdoor experience is a major plus. Manufacturing experience is a plus. But storytelling instinct is mandatory.
THE CAMERA IS NOT THE PRODUCT
We don't need someone obsessed with having the newest camera.
We care about:
What did you capture? Why does it matter? Can you turn it into a story? You should be equally comfortable shooting a polished product sequence and pulling out an iPhone because something completely unexpected just happened.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Six months from now, we should have a growing library of stories documenting the evolution of Coalcracker. Someone should be able to watch our YouTube channel and feel like they are inside the company watching it happen.
They should see:
Ideas → prototypes → failures → breakthroughs → manufacturing → field testing → finished products → growth. And they should feel like they know the people building it.
WHY THIS ROLE IS DIFFERENT
Most content jobs start with: "Here's the content calendar. Go make these videos." This one starts with: "Something interesting is happening. Go find it." Coalcracker already has the story. Your job is to capture it.
TO APPLY
Send:
Your portfolio or YouTube channel 3-5 examples of your strongest storytelling work A short explanation of why documentary-style storytelling interests you Your experience with filming and editing Your expected compensation We're much more interested in what you've actually made than in a résumé full of credentials. If your reaction to this job is: "I want to follow this guy around and figure out what the hell is going to happen next," you might be exactly who we're looking for.
