Job Description

Company Overview:
Brown Strauss is the premier structural steel service center in the United States. We have the deepest inventory for your wide flange beam, structural tube, structural channel, structural angle and your other structural needs. We have over 120,000 tons of structural steel on the floor ready for next day delivery. Since our founding in 1905 we've grown to ten locations serving 32 states, and we're proud to be 100% employee-owned via an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP).
Position Overview:
We are seeking a committed Material Handler to join our team in Menomonie, WI who will stage, load, and unload material among other duties in a safe and efficient manner and represent Brown Strauss with a positive attitude. This role will work in a Steel Distribution Center warehouse and is responsible for moving the steel that helps build America's infrastructure, industries, and communities . Key Responsibilities:
Operates overhead cranes in a safe and efficient manner and applies understanding of equipment so as to not overload the cranes. Inspects equipment, including overhead cranes and saws and completes inspection reports. Reads and understands paperwork so that orders are processed correctly. Uses tape measure and micrometer. Records all information correctly on paperwork to include material heat #, Location and any changes with original orders. Uses banding equipment to band product. Applies understanding of color codes to mark all material into a correct manner. Applies understanding of where and how materials are located in the warehouse and restocks materials in the correct location as it arrives. Keeps warehouse clean to ensure walking areas are clear and free of debris. To make sure all stacks are square and blocked correctly to prevent injury. Must be keenly aware of safety and watch for safety of others. Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of experience with overhead cranes preferred.
  • Strong phone skills and knowledge of office procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand basic instructions, memos, and short letters in English.
  • Ability to write simple emails or letters.
  • Can present information clearly to customers, clients, and coworkers in one-on-one or small group settings.
  • Basic math skills: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Able to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and understand bar graphs.
  • Due to the safety & job requirements - must be able to follow written, spoken, or visual instructions and solve problems with clear instructions in English.
  • Basic computer skills.
