Police Officer I Job Duties:
The Police Officer is a sworn law enforcement position under the limited direction of the Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant or Chief of Police. Officers must be capable of providing a full range of law enforcement services. They enforce laws, investigate complaints, investigate incidents that may have an impact on the University, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend and arrest offenders, identify the source of problems in the Stout community and work with the Stout community to resolve issues. All Police Officers in permanent status are expected to have the ability to conduct complex investigations, take photographs, and collect physical evidence. Police officers must be able to prepare complete investigative reports and testify to their contents when required. Police Officers must maintain a high level of proficiency in the use of police equipment including the handling and use of firearms and be capable of using deadly force when appropriate based on the laws of the State of Wisconsin and Department procedure. Police Officers must be capable of working in cooperation with officers from other agencies and interacting with persons from other University departments, mental health and social services agencies. Police Officers may be required to participate in crowd control and dignitary protection details. Experienced Police Officers may be selected to serve as Field Training Officers, Evidence Technicians or in other specialty areas, in which cases additional training is provided. Police Officers must support the UW-Stout University and the UW-Stout Police Department's mission, vision, and core values.Key Job Responsibilities:
Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case informationDepartment:
University Police (Police & Parking Services) is a state certified police agency vested with providing law enforcement services for the University of Wisconsin - Stout. Officers either meet or exceed the training requirements of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. University Police are available 24/7/365 to help students, faculty, staff and guests in need of assistance through active patrols of campus or dispatched response protocols. University Police collaborates with campus departments and community agencies offering resources and support regarding crime prevention, emergency response, and public safety initiatives. University Police also manages all of the on-campus parking, including permit sales, parking lot maintenance, and enforcement of parking regulations. $29 per hour (certifiable - may be eligible for future step increases). or $22.00 per hour (non-certifiable - may be eligible for future step increases). 12 month probationary period required.Required Qualifications:
- At least 21 years of age by hire date
- Must possess or be eligible to possess a Wisconsin Driver's License.
- Minimum of 60 college credits earned/completed within 5 years from date of hire.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and special events.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in criminal justice or related field.
- Prior law enforcement experience, especially in a campus, community-oriented, or municipal setting.
- Working knowledge in the use of CAD systems, MACH Client and TraCS.
- Specialized training in campus/community policing, crisis intervention, or threat assessment.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Demonstrated experience in problem-solving policing, de-escalation, and conflict mediation.
- Understanding of Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA, and other laws/regulations that impact campus safety.
