Corrections Sergeant COR/4 Corrections
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the work of corrections facility staff.MAJOR DUTIES
Supervises correctional officers under the rank of Sergeant inside the guard lines. Supervises maintenance and carpentry shop operations. Determines and takes appropriate action to address dangerous or emergency situations. Maintains order and discipline among inmates. Supervises, observes, monitors, and controls inmates as they participate in tasks, work details, programs, recreation, daily living, leisure time, and other activities. Conducts census and official inmate counts. Conducts random drug tests of inmates. Makes rounds and perimeter checks of the institution to maintain security; checks locks, fences, alarms, and other security devices. Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines. Maintains control of key and tool inventory. Serves as on-call supervisor. Establishes and maintains inventories and reports for institution armory and ensures that all weapons and ammunition are in proper working order; performs regular maintenance as needed. Conducts investigations and inmate disciplinary hearings. Conducts outside detail inspections. Performs other related duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of modern corrections principles and practices. Knowledge of criminal justice system processes. Knowledge of supervisory principles. Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures and federal, state and local laws and regulations. Knowledge of building maintenance principles. Knowledge of inmate labor laws. Skill in planning, organization and decision making. Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of firearms and restraint equipment.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Corrections Lieutenant assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.GUIDELINES
Guidelines include departmental standard operating procedures, county policies, fire codes, and federal, state and local laws. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
This position consists of varied administrative, supervisory, and security duties. The need to respond to emergency situations contributes to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the work of corrections facility staff. Successful performance helps ensure compliance with rules and regulations as well as the safety of inmates, employees, and visitors.CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers, inmates, vendors, and the general public. Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, resolve problems, settle matters, and motivate personnel.PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while standing or walking. The employee utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office, in a corrections facility, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices and specialized equipment.SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Corrections Corporal (3) and Correctional Officer (3).MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three year's experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification by the Georgia Department of Corrections.Similar remote jobs
