Job Description

This job class represents work responsible for the maintenance and repair of the organization's motorized vehicles and equipment. Mechanic perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including leading, planning, training, reviewing work for major and minor repairs to automotive diesels and combustion equipment, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specification; scheduling maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment; and maintaining records of all equipment repairs.
Essential Functions:
(Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions). Plans, trains, and reviews the work for major and minor repairs to automotive diesel and combustion equipment. Plans, directs, and participates in the repair and maintenance of internal combustion equipment including diesels. Verifies the work for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications. Ensures the adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Schedules maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment; maintains records of all equipment repairs. Researches technical data required for the repair of automotive and construction equipment systems. Inspects and diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic defects and problems in automotive, construction, and other mechanical equipment. Performs diagnostic activities for electronic fuel systems and computer-controlled systems on gasoline and diesel engines; performs accurate measurements and tolerances. Replaces component parts on vehicles and equipment; performs engine tune-ups, rebuilding, and overhauling; performs safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubricating and replacing worn parts. Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains air conditioning systems. Analyzes failures, determines problems and causes, and recommends solutions. Performs gas welding and fabrication services; performs maintenance in specialized equipment including buses, scooters, and heavy equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
Operations, services, and activities of a fleet maintenance program ; Principles and techniques of supervision, performance management, and discipline; Methods and techniques of automotive repair and maintenance; Principles, workings, and parts of gasoline and diesel engines, electronic controls, electrical systems, fuel and hydraulic systems, transmissions, generators, pumps; Welding techniques; Price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; and Hazards and safety precautions used in maintenance and repair activities.
Skills to:
Operate motorized vehicles for testing and diagnostic purposes; Operate power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and equipment; and Read, understand, and apply technical manuals.
Ability to:
Independently perform the most difficult diagnostic and repair services; Interpret, explain, and enforce organization policies and procedures; Operate power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance; e.g., jacks, hydraulic lifts, hoists, gauges, air tools, electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; Establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures; Maintain accurate and timely record keeping procedures; Complete assigned projects independently and in a timely manner; Work independently in the absence of supervision; Communicate effectively orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public; and Use a personal computer, telephone, and mobile or portable radio.
