Job Description
The Mechanic I serves as the City's lead mechanic and primary fleet manager. This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of preventative and corrective maintenance for all municipal vehicles and equipment, including light vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized utility assets. Duties include hands-on mechanical work, fleet oversight, staff supervision, maintenance planning, and service record management. The Head Mechanic ensures all City-owned vehicles and equipment remain safe, operational, and compliant with applicable regulations. Supports and performs mechanical maintenance, repair, and overhaul of equipment used in utility plants and related facilities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive. Lead and perform skilled maintenance and mechanical repairs on automobiles, trucks, police vehicles, fire apparatus, heavy equipment, small engines, and utility vehicles. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel system problems. Develop and implement a city-wide preventative maintenance program for all fleet vehicles and equipment. Maintain detailed service records, equipment logs, and fleet maintenance history using digital or manual tracking systems. Inspect vehicles and equipment regularly for safety, emissions compliance, and mechanical condition; perform road tests as needed. Schedule repairs and assign priorities for servicing based on equipment usage and operational needs. Provide oversight, training, and daily direction to Mechanic II and assigned laborers. Coordinate and monitor work conducted by outside vendors for warranty repairs, body work, tire service, or specialty maintenance. Recommend specifications for equipment procurement, fleet replacement schedules, and upgrades. Monitor part inventories, prepare purchase requests, and ensure timely acquisition of materials and supplies. Operate diagnostic software and tools to evaluate vehicle performance and clear system faults. Ensure the safety, organization, and cleanliness of the shop and related work areas. Assist other departments in mechanical needs, equipment setup, or field repairs. Respond to emergency breakdowns or snow removal equipment failures after hours or during adverse conditions. Prepare periodic reports on equipment downtime, repair costs, and fleet utilization for management review. Perform welding, fabrication, or modification on custom parts or mounting assemblies. Provide input during budget planning for fleet maintenance, capital needs, and tools/equipment procurement. Adhere to OSHA standards and City safety policies in all work activities. Perform other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS

Gasoline and diesel engine diagnostics and repair methods. Hydraulics, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes, and fuel injection systems. Best practices for fleet maintenance, scheduling, and cost tracking. Welding, fabrication, and modification of vehicle components. Parts inventory systems, procurement, and vendor coordination. Local, state, and federal safety and emissions standards. Preventative maintenance programs and digital fleet management systems. Occupational hazards and safety precautions for mechanical work. Techniques and tools used in heavy equipment and small engine repair.Ability to:
Diagnose and repair complex mechanical issues independently and efficiently. Plan, implement, and manage a multi-department preventive maintenance program. Supervise, train, and mentor mechanic staff and laborers. Operate shop equipment, diagnostic software, and hand/power tools safely. Maintain detailed service logs and analyze fleet performance metrics. Communicate effectively with other departments, vendors, and City officials. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Prioritize repair tasks during emergencies or high-demand operations (e.g., snow events). Interpret service manuals, schematics, and OEM documentation.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors (shop environment) and outdoors in various weather conditions. Exposure to loud noise, grease, fuel, chemicals, fumes, dust, and mechanical hazards is expected.Physical :
An incumbent must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and must possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate hand and power tools and equipment utilized in the upkeep, repair and maintenance tasks. Must also possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull heavy equipment and tools. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level may be moderate to intense depending on activity performed.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education/Training Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Minimum of four (4) years of experience in mechanical maintenance of light or heavy duty vehicles and equipment or related field. Associate degree in Diesel Mechanics, Automotive Technology, or a related field is highly desirable and may be substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.Additional Requirements:
