Job Title:
Medical Assistant - Mohs Surgery Job Description This role supports a Mohs micrographic surgery practice by providing hands-on clinical assistance, comprehensive patient support, and accurate administrative documentation. The medical assistant prepares procedure rooms, assists the Mohs surgeon throughout all stages of surgery, manages tissue specimens, and ensures thorough electronic medical record documentation. The position also coordinates appointments, facilitates insurance processes, and maintains regulatory compliance while working within a specialized dermatology environment that uses multiple EMR systems. Responsibilities + Prepare exam and procedure rooms for Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical visits, ensuring all procedural instruments and supplies are properly set up and the clinic flow remains efficient. + Assist the Mohs surgeon during all stages of the procedure, including preoperative care, tissue preparation, hemostasis, wound closure, and postoperative care. + Perform patient intake by obtaining medical history, reviewing consent forms, capturing surgical photographs, and addressing pre-procedure questions and concerns. + Provide clear wound care instructions and educate patients on post-procedure expectations, including signs and symptoms that require follow-up. + Process and handle tissue specimens for pathology evaluation according to established protocols, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. + Ensure thorough and accurate documentation of procedures, medications, MIPS-related information, and follow-up instructions in the electronic medical record (EMR) system. + Schedule pre- and post-operative appointments and assist patients with inquiries related to their visits and procedures. + Confirm patient insurance coverage and obtain prior authorizations when required, following practice protocols. + Accurately complete patient charting and documentation to support continuity of care and billing requirements. + Manage pathology logs and act as a liaison between the physician and patient to communicate pathology results and document all communications according to protocol. + Record required information in compliance logs, including pathology, biopsy, laboratory, and temperature logs, in accordance with regulatory standards. + Adhere to and maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards, and complete mandatory compliance training as required. + Cross-train in the Mohs laboratory to perform histotechnology-related tasks to the extent allowed by state-specific CLIA requirements, as needed. + Cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support broader practice needs when required. + Perform other duties as assigned to support the smooth operation of the clinic and high-quality patient care. Essential Skills + Demonstrated experience in medical assisting, including direct patient care in a clinical setting. + Working knowledge of medical terminology, particularly in dermatology and surgical care. + Experience supporting dermatology or surgical procedures, including patient intake, preparation, and follow-up. + Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems, including documenting procedures, medications, and follow-up instructions. + Ability to process and handle tissue specimens for pathology evaluation according to established protocols. + Strong attention to detail in charting, documentation, and compliance logging. + Ability to provide clear, compassionate patient education on wound care and post-procedure expectations. + Understanding of and adherence to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards. + Effective communication skills to serve as a liaison between physicians and patients regarding pathology results and care instructions. + Organizational skills to manage scheduling, insurance verification, and prior authorization processes. + 1-2 years of recent experience in a dermatology or surgical setting preferred. + Medical Assistant (MA) certification preferred. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in a specialty practice, particularly in Mohs surgery, dermatology, or cosmetic dermatology. + Familiarity with dermatology-specific workflows, including pre- and post-operative patient coordination. + Experience with multiple EMR platforms, including NextGen and EMA, or similar systems. + Comfort with cross-training in Mohs laboratory processes and histotechnology tasks within state-specific CLIA guidelines. + Willingness to cross-train and support general and cosmetic dermatology services as needed. + Ability to adapt to a fast-paced clinical environment and adjust to changing clinic flow throughout the day. + Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-centered approach to care. Work Environment On site 8am-5pm Mon-Fri, no weekends required Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portsmouth, NH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
