Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Summit City Steel Erection (SCSE) is seeking an experienced Metal Estimator to develop detailed material takeoffs and cost estimates across structural steel, metal building systems, insulated metal panels, roof and wall panels, trim, insulation, and miscellaneous metals. This role supports rapid, accurate quoting across new construction, retrofits, and additions while maintaining quality standards and cost control. The Metal Estimator will work hand-in-hand with the Senior PM / Senior Estimator and field teams to ensure material accuracy, pricing precision, and on-time bid delivery across all three operating divisions: Structural Steel, Metal Building / PEMB, and Industrial Maintenance & Repair.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Material Takeoffs:
Perform detailed material takeoffs from architectural, structural, and shop drawings for structural steel, PEMB systems, insulated metal panels, roof/wall panels, trim, insulation, and miscellaneous metals. e
Quoting Software:
Develop and submit material quotes through the Nucor eQuoting platform and the Metallic eQuoting platform (SCSE is a Metallic dealer).
Site Visits & Field Measurements:
Travel to active and prospective job sites to perform field measurements, condition surveys, and as-built verifications to ensure materials are ordered accurately for retrofits, additions, and new construction.
Multi-Division Estimating:
Support the Structural Steel Division, Metal Building / PEMB Division, and Industrial Maintenance & Repair Division on material estimating needs.
Drawing Review & Markup:
Use Bluebeam Revu to review plan sets, perform digital takeoffs, mark up drawings, and document scope assumptions.
Project Documentation:
Maintain organized estimate files, bills of materials, and supporting documentation in Procore.
Vendor Coordination:
Solicit and evaluate material pricing from suppliers, panel manufacturers, and PEMB vendors; track pricing trends and lead times.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work directly with the Senior PM / Senior Estimator, project managers, division managers, and field leadership to clarify scope, resolve discrepancies, and validate estimates before issuance.
Insulation Estimating:
Quantify and price insulation systems associated with metal building, PEMB, and re-sheet projects.
Growth Path:
Opportunity to grow into labor estimating, full project pricing, and broader project economics over time.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience performing material takeoffs and estimating in structural steel, metal buildings, miscellaneous metals, or related metal fabrication / erection work. Strong proficiency reading and interpreting architectural, structural, and PEMB drawing sets, including specifications and shop drawings. Working knowledge of metal building systems, structural steel components, insulated metal panels, trim packages, roof/wall panels, and insulation materials. Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu for digital takeoffs and plan markup. Comfort working in cloud-based project management software (Procore preferred). Strong attention to detail with the discipline to maintain accurate, well-documented estimate files. Ability to perform job site visits independently, including walking active construction sites and taking field measurements. Clear written and verbal communication; able to engage directly with PMs, field leadership, and vendors. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 3-7
years of estimating experience in structural steel, PEMB, or metal building systems. Direct experience using the Nucor eQuoting platform and/or Metallic eQuoting platform. Experience estimating across multiple metal disciplines (structural, PEMB, sheeting, trim, insulation, misc. metals). Experience estimating retrofit, re-sheet, and addition work in addition to new construction. Familiarity with material pricing, supplier relationships, and freight/logistics for steel and metal building components. Background in field operations, fabrication, ironworking, or PEMB installation. Willingness to grow into labor estimating and project-level cost analysis.

PHYSICAL & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Regular travel to job sites across Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. Ability to walk active construction sites, climb ladders, and navigate uneven terrain safely. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally. Comfortable working in varied weather conditions during site measurements. Occasional overnight travel for site assessments and project coordination.
Pay:
$65,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
