Building Principal and District Activities Director Job Summary:
The Middle School Activities Director (AD) is a stipend-based leadership position responsible for the coordination and oversight of all middle school extracurricular activities, including athletics, fine arts, and clubs. This position reports directly to the building administrator(s) designated by the Principal, and works in close partnership with coaches, advisors, and families to ensure a high-quality, inclusive, and well-organized student activity program. This position is supported by the High School Activities Director. The Middle School Activities Director plays a critical role in supporting student growth, school culture, and community engagement through extracurricular involvement. By maintaining strong communication, efficient operations, and inclusive practices, the AD ensures that middle school activities are well-managed, accessible, and enriching for all students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Recruit, hire, and onboard coaches, advisors, and activity sponsors. Conduct evaluations of all coaching and activity staff in collaboration with the building administration. Coordinate game, event, and practice schedules in alignment with district and league guidelines. Reserve appropriate facilities for practices, meetings, and events (gyms, auditoriums, fields, etc.). Schedule transportation for off-campus events, ensuring timely communication with the transportation department, coaches, participants, families, and building administration. Arrange for game officials, and event staff. Attend and supervise home events and activities, including evenings and some weekends. Work with building administration to develop a coverage plan that meets the needs of the building. Be available during non-instructional hours (before/after school) for meetings, communication, and coordination tasks. Maintain flexibility to address last-minute changes or emergencies that may arise during events or in scheduling. Foster a positive and professional culture among extracurricular staff; address concerns promptly and supportively. Create and maintain a calendar of all extracurricular events, including registration dates, practice times, and competition/performance schedule. Serve as the central point of communication for all middle school activity-related information. Maintain timely communication with families via newsletters, school website, emails, and social media. Develop promotional materials to highlight upcoming activities, registration opportunities, and student achievements. Ensure registration processes are accessible, accurate, and well-communicated. Promote inclusive programming and ensure compliance with gender equity and accessibility standards. Provide seasonal updates to the admin team regarding program status, challenges, and needs. Collaborate on resolving personnel or participant concerns, ensuring alignment with school policies. Participate in site leadership meetings as requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong organizational and leadership skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work flexible hours (some evenings and weekends required). Proficiency with scheduling software, and digital communication platforms. Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community stakeholders.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a school setting with frequent evenings and some weekend hours required. Duties may require standing for extended periods, lifting moderate weights, and supervising both indoor and outdoor events.
Qualifications:
Required:
HS Diploma/GED, AND two (2) years of professional experience working with secondary students and families; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. Experience coordinating out-of-school-time (OST) programming for middle school-aged youth in a school or extracurricular setting. Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices.
Preferred:
Associates Degree in education, administration, or a related field. Previous experience coordinating extracurricular or athletic programs. Knowledge of MSHSL rules and district-level activities management. Experience managing budgets and staff in a school setting.
