MIG Welder - Heavy Gauge Steel Fabrication Job Description This role involves setting up, operating, and tending welding equipment to produce high-quality welds on heavy gauge stainless and mild steel components used in compactors, pavement maintenance, and paving machinery. You will interpret blueprints, perform multi-pass welds, and support production by delivering precise and structurally sound welds in a fabrication shop environment. Responsibilities Set up, operate, and tend welding, soldering, or brazing machines in a fabrication shop environment. Perform MIG welding on heavy gauge stainless steel and mild steel components, including material up to one inch thick. Execute 3-pass welds and other multi-pass welds as required to meet structural and quality standards. Lay out, fit, and weld components according to blueprints and work instructions. Read and interpret blueprints and apply knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure accurate fabrication. Support the production of compactors, pavement maintenance equipment, and paving machinery by completing weldments to specification. Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and adherence to engineering requirements, making adjustments as needed. Use wire feed welding equipment and related tools safely and efficiently. Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of welding PPE and safe operation of welding and fabrication equipment. Manage individual workload to meet production schedules and contribute to overall team output. Maintain a clean and organized work area and care for company-provided tools and equipment. Essential Skills At least 2 years of MIG welding experience on heavy gauge steel. Proficiency in MIG welding on stainless steel and mild steel, including material up to one inch thick. Ability to perform 3-pass and multi-pass welds to meet structural and quality requirements. Experience welding from blueprints and following detailed fabrication drawings. Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and its application in fabrication work. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and shop drawings accurately. Hands-on experience in a fabrication, shop floor, or structural steel environment. Proficiency with wire feed welding processes and equipment. Strong focus on safety and proper use of welding PPE and equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Students currently enrolled in a two-year welding program will be considered. Experience with flux core welding processes. Exposure to TIG welding and stick welding on various materials such as stainless steel, mild steel, carbon steel, and structural steel. Experience in sheet metal fabrication and structural steel welding is beneficial. Comfort working with a variety of welding processes and adapting to different weld joint configurations. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds. Why Work Here? You will work in a large, established facility that manufactures and distributes the paving equipment commonly seen on construction sites, offering exposure to a wide range of projects from start to finish rather than repetitive assembly line work. The organization emphasizes respectful treatment of employees and provides consistent weekly feedback from supervisors to support your growth and development. The culture includes regular celebrations, with gifts or prizes provided for every major holiday, creating a positive and engaging workplace. Contractors have clear pathways to permanent opportunities, with the ability to apply for direct roles and be hired on through a contract buyout process. Work Environment The role is based on a shop floor and fabrication environment with occasional loud noises of approximately 80 dB or higher and limited exposure to ultraviolet rays from welding arcs and plasma torches. Safety is a top priority, and the company supplies all welding gear and equipment except for steel-toed safety boots, which you must provide. If you prefer to use your own welding helmet, you are welcome to do so. The work setting is similar to a mechanic shop, where projects move through different stages from start to finish rather than a traditional assembly line. Shifts available include 2nd shift from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 3rd shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.
