MoCI K-2 Teacher 2026-27 - (LSFT) Lake Shore Public Schools - 4.8 Saint Clair Shores, MI Job Details Full-time $49,169 - $97,772 a year 8 hours ago Qualifications Crisis management Full Job Description One (1), Full-Time, K-2 Moderate Cognitive Impairment (MoCI) Teacher Position Purpose Under the general supervision of the School Principal and the Director of Special Education, the K-2 Moderate Cognitive Impairment Teacher provides specialized instruction designed to meet the unique academic, developmental, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and functional needs of students with moderate cognitive impairments. The teacher works to maximize each student's growth and independence by implementing district-approved curriculum, individualized instructional strategies, communication supports, behavior interventions, and activities of daily living instruction within a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment. Essential Functions Provides individualized and small-group instruction in foundational academic, communication, social-emotional, behavioral, motor, and functional life skills aligned to students' Individualized Education Programs ("IEPs"). Conducts ongoing assessments and progress monitoring to identify student strengths and needs and to adjust instruction and interventions accordingly. Develops, implements, and monitors Individualized Education Programs ("IEPs"), including accommodations, modifications, transition goals, behavior intervention plans, and related service coordination. Implements evidence-based instructional strategies and behavior supports designed to increase student independence, engagement, communication, and self-regulation. Collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and families to support student success across educational settings. Provides instruction and support in activities of daily living, adaptive skills, communication systems, social interaction, classroom routines, and school participation. Supervises and directs paraprofessional staff assigned to the classroom and provides guidance regarding instructional practices, student supports, and behavior management strategies. Creates and maintains a structured, positive, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment that supports student learning, safety, and emotional well-being. Maintains accurate and confidential student records, progress reports, behavioral documentation, Medicaid documentation (if applicable), and compliance records in accordance with district procedures and applicable laws. Promotes positive communication and collaborative relationships with families and serves as a liaison between home and school to support student growth and consistency of services. Participates in professional learning opportunities and remains current on best practices, instructional strategies, assistive technology, behavior intervention techniques, and legal requirements related to special education and students with moderate cognitive impairments. Selects, utilizes, and maintains appropriate instructional materials, adaptive equipment, assistive technology, sensory supports, and classroom resources necessary to support student learning and participation. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Knowledge of child development, early elementary instructional practices, and specialized instructional strategies for students with moderate cognitive impairments. Knowledge of differentiated instruction, positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), communication systems, sensory supports, and adaptive learning strategies. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and compliance requirements related to special education and student services. Ability to develop and implement individualized instructional programs aligned with IEP goals and student developmental needs. Ability to effectively collaborate with paraprofessionals, related service providers, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, staff, and administrators. Ability to utilize educational technology, assistive technology, data systems, and instructional software necessary to perform assigned duties. Ability to establish and maintain positive, supportive, and professional relationships with students and families. Ability to maintain patience, flexibility, organization, confidentiality, and sound judgment in a dynamic educational environment. Physical and Mental Demands / Work Hazards The employee in this position is regularly required to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents; observe student behavior and classroom activities; and maintain consistent attention to student safety and instructional needs. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, positioning, and assisting students and classroom materials, including occasional lifting or physical assistance of students as needed. The employee must be able to safely respond to student behavioral, emotional, communication, and medical needs, including crisis intervention, de-escalation, redirection, and physical management techniques consistent with district training and procedures. Duties may involve supporting students with toileting, feeding, mobility, self-care, sensory regulation, and other daily living activities. The position requires sustained concentration, flexibility, emotional regulation, and the ability to manage multiple student needs simultaneously in a structured and active classroom environment. Work may involve exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and student behaviors that may include verbal outbursts, elopement, noncompliance, or occasional physical aggression. Employees are expected to follow all district safety procedures, crisis response protocols, and applicable state and federal regulations.
