The job of Occupational Therapist is done for the purpose/s of assessing students' functional development level; maximizing students' functional level; providing information for program development and student placement; improving students' performance; and providing information on child development and/or issues on specific students to instructional personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary and without notice. Depending upon individual assignments, the Occupational Therapist performs all or a combination of several of the following duties:
Evaluating:
Select and administer appropriate tests for a full range of therapist disabilities; interpret results to parents and other MDT members; write reports and maintain required documentation
Program Development:
determine placement in programs; develop IEP's meeting Washington State Rules & Regulations; conduct IEP conferences, and maintain documentation Supervise, collaborate, and instruct occupational therapy assistant under one's license to ensure all duties of COTA are done in compliance with state laws, federal laws, and research based.
Program Implementation:
Implement therapy programs and maintain data collection system
Conferences:
Provide information to parents, teachers, school staff, consult with physicians, community agencies and others.
Multidisciplinary Team:
Vital member of a team which necessitates attendance at various meetings with consultation of team members; Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding children's educational welfare; Reports any pertinent information to the proper authorities in cases of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse; Assesses occupational therapy and educational needs of referred students and consults with appropriate professional persons regarding implications and results; Participates in eligibility meetings, IEP meetings, and disciplinary review meetings at various schools within the division, as needed; Cooperates with staff members and parents in maintaining a positive climate during meetings and/or conferences; Consults with appropriate persons concerning the educational environment and factors affecting students' learning; serves as a resource at the school level as well as within the community (i.e., student study committees, in-service, interagency); Prepares and conducts assessment reports and other administrative documents as necessary; Maintains accurate records of all occupational therapist services provided while also ensure IEP minutes are being met according to the legal document; Maintains clearly written and comprehensive reports and data which provide practical recommendations; Assists in interpretation of criteria for determination of eligibility; Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date; Serves as a liaison between the schools and the consulting clinical therapists, therapist and/or other health officials/agencies; Maintains a liaison with the community and state organizations; Interprets and upholds School Board policy and special education procedures; Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services in accordance with school/division policies and practices. Abilities Required:
Skills to apply assessment techniques and treatment modalities, communicate effectively. Knowledge of assessment techniques and treatment modalities, relevant education codes, state and district policies, child development patterns. Abilities to complete a case study and develop an individual education plan; work independently, be flexible and work under time constraints, work effectively with staff, parents, students and community. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, reaching/handling/fingering, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/visual accommodation. Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or
Testing Required :
Licensure for Occupational Therapy, Washington State ESA Certificate, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Valid Driver's License and evidence of insurability.
