Operations Manager Job Description Regional Dry Van, Flatbed, and Dry Bulk Trucking Company Position Summary The Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a regional trucking company operating dry van, flatbed, and dry bulk freight services. This role manages dispatch, fleet utilization, driver performance, customer service, safety coordination, and operational profitability. The Operations Manager ensures freight is moved safely, efficiently, and profitably while maintaining high service standards for customers and supporting driver retention. This position requires strong leadership, transportation industry knowledge, problem-solving ability, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities Operations & Dispatch Management Oversee daily dispatch operations for dry van, flatbed, and dry bulk divisions Coordinate load planning, routing, and scheduling to maximize equipment utilization and profitability Monitor freight movement and proactively address service disruptions or delays Ensure on-time pickup and delivery performance meets customer expectations Balance fleet capacity with freight demand and driver availability Work closely with brokers, customers, and sales staff to optimize lane opportunities Fleet & Driver Management Supervise dispatchers, driver managers, and operational support staff Support driver recruitment, onboarding, retention, and performance management Maintain effective communication with drivers regarding schedules, safety, service issues, and customer expectations Monitor driver productivity, HOS compliance, detention, and idle time Assist in resolving driver concerns and operational conflicts Safety & Compliance Ensure compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and company safety regulations Coordinate with safety personnel to manage driver qualification files, logs, inspections, and accident reporting Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization Monitor CSA scores and implement corrective action plans when needed Ensure permits, registrations, and equipment documentation remain current Financial & Performance Management Monitor operational KPIs including: Revenue per mile Loaded vs. empty miles Fuel efficiency Driver turnover On-time service performance Equipment utilization Manage operating costs including fuel, maintenance coordination, labor, and outside carrier expenses Assist ownership/accounting with budgeting and profitability analysis Identify opportunities for operational improvements and cost reduction Customer Service & Business Development Support Maintain strong relationships with existing customers and freight partners Assist in resolving service issues, claims, and customer concerns Support sales efforts by identifying operational opportunities and capacity solutions Ensure service standards are maintained across all freight divisions Qualifications 5+ years of trucking operations or transportation management experience Experience managing regional dry van, flatbed, or bulk operations preferred Strong understanding of
DOT/FMCSA
regulations and transportation compliance Experience with TMS, ELD, and fleet management systems Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Proficient in Microsoft Office and transportation software platforms Knowledge of freight markets and rate structures preferred Preferred Skills Load planning and route optimization Driver management and retention Problem-solving and conflict resolution Financial and operational analysis Multi-division fleet coordination Customer relationship management Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary based on experience Performance bonus opportunities Health insurance Paid time off and holidays Retirement plan options Company vehicle and/or phone allowance (if applicable) Reporting Structure The Operations Manager reports directly to the Owner, President, or General Manager and works closely with dispatch, safety, maintenance, accounting, and sales departments.
