Job Description

The organ accompanist plays an invaluable role in the liturgy, supporting both the congregation and the choir. Under the guidance of the Director of Sacred Music, he or she provides skilled and dependable musical accompaniment both during the liturgy and during rehearsals. The Church is adamant about the importance of music during the Mass, thus highlighting the dignity of the accompanist's role. "A liturgical celebration can have no more solemn or pleasing feature than the whole assembly's expressing its faith and devotion in song" (Musicam Sacram, 16). The organ accompanist is often the leader of this expression. By means of his or her understanding of the liturgy and musical talent, a more "solemn" and "pleasing" worship of God can be experienced each Sunday. Expectations Provide dependable organ accompaniment to the choir and congregation at regularly scheduled liturgies, under guidance of the Director of Sacred Music Provide flexible organ and piano accompaniment at regularly scheduled choir rehearsals Prepare music in advance, including ordinaries, hymns, and choral accompaniments Maintain a professional, cooperative, and flexible working relationship with church staff and volunteers Ensure respectful care and proper use of church instruments Attend planning meetings or additional rehearsals as requested, within the scope of hours Knowledge of and flexibility regarding feasts and solemnities throughout the year Hours ~6-7 hours per week, including liturgies, rehearsals, and preparation time. Weekly hours to fluctuate depending on liturgical season (e.g., Christmas, Holy Week, etc.) Summer hours are variable (choir out of season)
