Job Description
The Sedation Nurse supports the Oral Surgeon in delivering safe and effective IV sedation for dental procedures. This role involves patient preparation, intraoperative monitoring, and post-operative recovery care, ensuring a calm and safe experience for patients undergoing oral surgery. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-operative assessments, including reviewing medical history, allergies, and medications
- Prepare and maintain IV sedation equipment and medications (e.g., Midazolam)
- Assist the Oral Surgeon during IV sedation procedures
- Monitor and document patient vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate) throughout sedation
- Ensure patient safety and comfort before, during, and after sedation
- Provide pre
- and post-operative instructions to patients and their escorts
- Maintain accurate sedation records, including drug batch numbers and expiry dates
- Ensure compliance with infection control and controlled drug protocols
- Support emergency response protocols if adverse reactions occur
- Sterilize instruments and disinfect the operatory post-procedure Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license (active and in good standing)
- Certification in IV therapy and moderate sedation monitoring (preferred)
- BLS and ACLS certification required
- Prior experience in dental, surgical, or anesthesia settings preferred Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of IV sedation protocols and patient monitoring
- Calm, reassuring demeanor with anxious or phobic patients
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a surgical team
- High attention to detail and safety Work Environment
- Fast-paced oral surgery practice
- Exposure to surgical instruments, IV medications, and patient bodily fluids
- Requires standing for extended periods and assisting with patient transfers
