Job Description

Nutley Family Service Bureau Peer Support Specialist Organization Description:
Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) Inc. is a comprehensive mental health and human service agency that has served Nutley Township and surrounding communities since 1913. Since 2025, NFSB has received accreditation from the Council on Accreditation (COA). We are also licensed by the State of New Jersey to operate and provide Mental Health Outpatient Services. Our accreditation and licensure are a testament to the quality of the services we offer. NFSB's Inclusive Healthy Communities (IHC) Training, Advocacy and Resource Center is a community change initiative funded by the Division of Disability Services, aimed at improving, enhancing and effectively increasing community services for people living with disabilities in Nutley Township and surrounding New Jersey communities. NFSB provides services in New Jersey, including but not limited to, Essex, Hudson, Bergen, Passaic and neighboring counties. Some services are provided in the community such as food distribution, while others are provided in our local offices. NFSB provides services to both children and adults.
Peer Support Specialist Position:
The Peer Support Specialist with a focus on disability and mental health will utilize their lived experience to provide non-clinical recovery support, mentoring, and advocacy. They empower individuals to manage symptoms, develop coping skills, and access community resources to foster independence and wellness. Key responsibilities include case management (ex. assisting with housing, employment, and treatment navigation), and support group facilitation. This position will work with teens and adults.

Hours:
24hrs. per week
Hourly Rate:
$20/hr.
Program Hours:
Monday - Wednesday; 9:00am - 5:00pm
Major Duties:
Peer Mentorship:
Offer personalized, one-on-one support based on shared experiences with mental health or disability.
Goal Setting:
Assist individuals in creating wellness plans, identifying personal goals, and building self-advocacy skills.
Group Facilitation:
Lead support groups, psychoeducational classes, or peer-run activities focusing on active healing, skill-building, and shared experience.
Community Integration:
Connect peers to resources, including housing, vocational services, transportation, and community social activities.
Advocacy and Case management:
Assist in navigating the healthcare, mental health, and disability service systems.
Crisis Support:
Provide emotional support and help develop coping strategies to avoid or manage crises. •
Documentation:
Maintain accurate, confidential records of client sessions and progress, tracking performance metrics, and preparing reports (Quarterly/yearly). Qualifications and Requirements •
Lived Experience:
Personal experience with mental health conditions, disability, navigating the mental health system, or two years of experience working with clients with disabilities and/or mental health conditions- providing case management and group facilitation.
Education:
A bachelor's degree in social work, psychology or related human services field preferred. High School degree required. •
Skills:
Strong empathy, active listening, communication skills, and boundary setting. Excellent communication, team oriented/collaborative, professional writing and interpersonal skills, community outreach and organizing, case management, group facilitation. • Proficiency in word processing and other computer functions using Windows, Word, and other Apps. •
Competency:
Demonstrated recovery and ability to model self-help tools. Demonstrated willingness and ability to share personal experiences and stories with the purpose and intent to build trust and collaboration with clients. • Requires a commitment to confidentiality and ethical guidelines • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
