Junior Varsity Jazz Band

Purpose Statement

The role of Junior Varsity Jazz Band is to direct and manage the Junior Varsity Jazz Band for their specific high school.

Job Title:

Junior Varsity Jazz Band

Reports To:

High School Instrumental Music (Director)

Wage/Hour Status:

Exempt (Stipend)

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of music techniques and procedures. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, instruct, take direction from head director and supervise students and staff. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm.
  • Proficient in organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • High School Diploma, required
  • Essential Functions
  • Organize and manage all aspects of the Junior Varsity jazz program.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of school-owned instruments. Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials related to the jazz band; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  • Collaborates with the band director on needs for all supplies and materials necessary for band-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations.
  • Develops and implements plans for the jazz band and shows written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.

Main tasks/responsibilities:
Competitions/Performances/Exhibits/Meets/Practices/Rehearsals/Festivals:

Jazz Ensemble

(39) - 1 hour rehearsals full band rehearsals (before school)

(10) - 1 hour rhythm section rehearsals (after school)

3 concerts (evenings)

3-4 contests/festivals (Saturday)

Jazz Lab

Thirty-nine 1 hour full band rehearsals (before school)

3 concerts

2 contests/festivals (Saturday)

Basketball Pep Band

4-6 Friday Night Home Games including a rehearsal before game (evening) Avg. time/per game is 4.5 hours

1-2 State tournament games (to be determined)

Jazz-o-rama (Saturday in January) 7 A.M. - 9 P.M.

Organize event to include:

Organize schedule

Hiring clinicians

Organize and manage facilities

Organize and implement promotion

Other Functions

Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as assigned.

Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision. Demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.

Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.

Uphold and adhere to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.

Support the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.

Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.

Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.

Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.

Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Working Environment Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
