Job Description
Part-Time Music Director Emmanuel Church in West Roxbury (Boston), MA is looking for a new part-time Music Director! We are small, growing Episcopal Church that loves to sing. We sing from Episcopal hymnals including: The Hymnal 1982 , Lift Every Voice and Sing, and Wonder, Love, and Praise, but we are open to other sources. We do not currently have a regular choir, but our compact, enthusiastic choir sings at seasonal services like Christmas Eve, Easter Day, and others, and we believe that we are in a good position to develop a strong music program at our church. Our organ (Wicks) and sanctuary piano (Chas. M. Stieff) are the mainstays of music at Emmanuel, along with occasional guest musicians on a variety of instruments. We hope to find candidates with a vision and gift for leading our congregation in liturgical music, and the ability to build a strong seasonal choir. We are open to the use of Emmanuel's organ for lessons, arranged with the approval of the Clergy and/or Vestry. This is a salaried position for 8 hours a week on average; range from $11,000-$12,000.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Music Performance- Work with the Rector to choose hymns for worship each Sunday
- Provide musical accompaniment for the 10am worship service on Sunday mornings and for special services throughout the year (Christmas Eve service, Holy Week services, Ash Wednesday, Easter Sunday, and other services from time to time)
- Occasionally play for weddings and funerals (compensation through honoria provided by the families), and other special services at Emmanuel
- Ensure that there is a plan to cover any absences on Sunday morning Choir Leadership
- Recruit parish members who like to sing to join a choir
- Prepare choir for occasional anthems and hymns during the Sunday 10am service and other Seasonal services
- Plan and coordinate at least one choir rehearsal a month, on average
- Coach singers and choir members to help them develop their abilities and talents Administration
- Maintain an organized library of sheet music
- Work with the Rector and volunteers to develop musical schedules, calendars and details for weekly service bulletins and newsletter.
- Work with the Rector to maintain organ, piano, and other instruments used by Emmanuel Parish. Schedule appropriate tuning and other maintenance as required
- Ensure that copyright laws are being followed
- Stay up to date with required Safe Church training and complete a CORI background check.
