Violin Group Classes at St John Paul II Catholic Academy (Dorchester)

Description:

Boston Music Project (BMP) is seeking a part-time Violin Group Class Director to lead group violin classes at St. John Paul II Catholic Academy in Dorchester. The Violin Group Class Director will teach students in a group-class setting, providing engaging, sequential instruction in violin technique, music literacy, ensemble skills, and musicianship. The Director will follow the BMP Curriculum and collaborate with BMP staff to plan lessons, select appropriate repertoire, prepare students for performances, and ensure that students develop strong foundational skills on their instruments. As BMP equally supports students' social development and musical growth, the Violin Group Class Director will also incorporate social-emotional learning into each class, including leadership, kindness, self-control, collaboration, and perseverance. The Violin Group Class Director will work collaboratively with BMP staff and school partners to ensure a positive, supportive, and high-quality learning experience for all students. 8:45-9:30 AM Violin Group Class Director Responsibilities

Lead engaging group violin classes for elementary-age students

Teach foundational and developing violin technique, including posture, instrument setup, bow technique, tone production, and intonation

Teach music literacy, rhythm, music theory, and ensemble skills appropriate to students' experience levels

Select and teach age- and level-appropriate repertoire in collaboration with BMP staff

Create structured, engaging lesson plans that support both individual student growth and successful group learning

Incorporate social-emotional learning into classes, including teamwork, leadership, kindness, self-control, and perseverance

Establish a positive and inclusive classroom culture with clear expectations and effective classroom management

Collaborate with BMP administrative staff and fellow Teaching Artists to establish student and ensemble goals

Communicate student progress, behavioral concerns, and other important updates to BMP staff

Support mid-year and end-of-year student assessments

Prepare students for concerts, showcases, andmunity performances

Attend required staff meetings, professional development opportunities, concerts, and program events

Qualifications:

2+ years of experience teaching young string players, preferably in a group or ensemble setting

Strong knowledge of violin/string pedagogy, repertoire, technique, and sequential curriculum development

Strong teaching, classroom management, and student engagement skills; background or degree in music education, performance, or a related field preferred

Familiarity with El Sistema-inspired music education and its emphasis on youth development,munity, and social change

Passion for teaching and amitment to supporting the musical, social, and personal growth of all students

Strong interpersonal,anizational, professional, andmunication skills

Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, BMP staff, fellow Teaching Artists, students, and families Position Commitment and Compensation

Tuesdays, 7:30 AM-11:30 AM at the St. John Paul II Catholic Academy Neponset Campus

Fridays, 7:30 AM-10:00 AM at the St. John Paul II Catholic Academy Columbia Campus

Attend required staff meetings, team meetings, and professional development sessions

Support and participate in scheduled student concerts, showcases, and program events

10-month contract, September 2026 through June 2027, following the program and school calendar

$42-$46 per hour, based on role, responsibilities, and experience

This is a part-time position and does not include health benefits
