Job Description

Danvers High School Jazz Band Director

Compensation:

$2,620 stipend (Part-Time, Non-Benefited)

Reports to: Director of Fine Arts

Position Overview

The High School Jazz Band Director is responsible for directing and developing the high school jazz band program, including planning and leading weekly evening rehearsals and preparing students for performances throughout the school year. The Jazz Band Director provides instruction in jazz performance practices, ensemble skills, improvisation, musical expression, and appropriate repertoire while fostering a positive and engaging musical environment.

Essential Responsibilities

Facilitate the audition process in conjunction with the high school Band Director and Director of Fine Arts.

Plan and conduct a weekly evening rehearsal of the high school jazz band.

Select and prepare appropriate jazz repertoire that is accessible, challenging, and representative of a variety of jazz styles and traditions.

Develop students' skills in ensemble performance, jazz style, improvisation, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, and musical expression.

Provide instruction and feedback to individual students and sections as needed.

Prepare the ensemble for two annual school concerts, including rehearsals leading up to each performance.

Coordinate with the Performing Arts staff regarding concert scheduling, facilities, equipment, and performance logistics.

Prepare students for additional performances, as appropriate, including music festivals, community events, school functions, and other outreach opportunities.

Maintain an organized rehearsal environment that promotes student responsibility, collaboration, musicianship, and respect.

Communicate rehearsal and performance expectations clearly to students.

Support the overall goals and mission of the high school performing arts program.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Schedule

Weekly evening rehearsal during the school year.

Additional rehearsals as needed in preparation for major performances.

Two primary school performances annually, with additional festival and community performances as opportunities arise.
