Job Description

Wicomico Presbyterian Church is in search of a skilled and passionate Music Director and Church Organist to provide musical leadership for our weekly traditional worship and congregational life. Music is central to our worship and ministry, and we value its role in enriching the spiritual life of our congregation. Wicomico Church is an active congregation of the Presbyterian Church, USA. Founded in 1683, the church has been located in downtown Salisbury, Maryland since 1838. Our congregation has about 135 members. Salisbury is about 30 miles from Ocean City, MD, and provides ready access to Washington DC and Baltimore, as well as Philadelphia to the north and Virginia Beach to the south. Wicomico Presbyterian music style is primarily traditional sacred, with an emphasis on quality organ leadership of hymns and service music. Our adult choir members are volunteers, with a mix of college students and older experienced adult vocal musicians. Our instruments include an Estonia Model 210, 6'10" grand piano and our Pipe Organ (Austin - Opus 2676) which was installed in 1982 and includes 2 manuals with 25 stops. We are upgrading and enhancing the organ console through the Walker organ company. The new state of the art console, to be installed in the fall of 2026, includes MIDI and digital voice capabilities in conjunction with the existing pipe components. We also have 5 full octaves of hand bells and three octaves of chimes.
Position summary:
The Music Director and Organist, in collaboration with the Pastor and worship leaders, provides leadership for the ministry of music at Wicomico Presbyterian Church by selecting and preparing worship music, directing and accompanying the church choir(s), leading worship music through the playing of the organ and piano, and by exercising stewardship of church music resources. We are looking to expand our worship and music programs; the Music Director will be directly involved with developing and supporting those programs.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Music degree with successful experience in directing a graded choir program in a church or school. Proficiency in organ performance and choral direction skills. Effective written and oral communications and ability to manage conflict.
Desired Qualifications:
Masters of Music degree with concentration in organ performance, sacred music or choral methods. Prior experience as a church music director and organist. Experience leading/ directing hand bell ensembles. Greater than two years of successful experience in directing a graded choir program in a church or school.
Compensation:
This is a part-time salaried position planned at $35,000 - $38,000 / year, with one week of vacation, sick-time accrued at 4 hours/month with no limitations on amount earned. $500/year professional expenses allowance. No medical or other benefits. Use of church instruments is allowed by the music director for use in private teaching arrangements.
