We are seeking a creative, collaborative, and spiritually minded Director of Music Ministries to lead, strengthen, and grow our music ministry and worship life.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Music Ministries is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, and leadership of the church's music ministry. Working in close partnership with the Pastor, organist/accompanist, staff, and laity, the Director will foster an inspiring musical environment that reflects Wesleyan theology, enhances liturgical worship, and engages participants of all ages.
Collaborate regularly with the Pastor to plan music that supports and enhances sermon themes, the liturgical calendar, and United Methodist worship traditions.
Worship Service Attendance:
Lead music for all regular Sunday worship services, special holy day services (e.g., Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Christmas Eve), and other services as scheduled.
Special Services:
Be available for weddings and funerals/memorial services, as negotiated with the Pastor.
Guest Musicians:
Identify, recruit, and arrange for occasional guest musicians and vocalists to enrich special services. 2.
Direct, rehearse, and lead weekly rehearsals for the adult vocal choir and handbell choir, as well as additional rehearsals as needed.
Accompanist Partnership:
Partner effectively with the church organist/accompanist in the planning, coordination, and execution of musical selections.
Spiritual Care:
Cultivate a supportive, Christian environment within ensembles through prayer, devotions, and ongoing pastoral connection with choir members. 3.
Ministry Growth & Community Collaboration Recruitment:
Proactively invite, recruit, and mentor new participants for the vocal and bell choirs.
Community Connection:
Maintain effective communication with ensemble members and the broader congregation using email, text, phone calls, and digital platforms.
Connectional & Community Partnerships:
Collaborate with neighboring United Methodist churches and local churches at large to organize joint services, shared musical programming, combined choirs, and shared music library/resource exchanges. 4.
Administration & Governance Budget Management:
Prepare, oversee, and manage the annual music ministry budget in consultation with the Finance Committee and SPRC.
Music Library & Equipment:
Oversee the purchase of sheet music, copyright licensing/compliance, and maintenance of the music library and instruments (or coordinate with a designated music librarian).
Committee & Staff Meetings:
Attend regular Staff meetings, Church Council meetings, and other leadership meetings as requested by the Pastor.
Denominational Alignment:
Ensure all music programming aligns with the theological standards, order, and polity described in The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church .
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Faith & Calling:
A committed Christian faith with an understanding of church music as a personal calling and ministry.
Liturgical & Musical Knowledge:
Strong proficiency in choral/handbell conducting, vocal technique, and comprehensive knowledge of Christian worship, hymnody, and liturgy.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree in music, sacred music, or equivalent substantive coursework/experience preferred.
Ministry Experience:
Previous experience leading music in a church or ministry setting preferred.
Technical Proficiency:
Ability to utilize modern administrative tools, including Microsoft Word, Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar), email, and web communication.
Interpersonal & Collaborative Skills:
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with pastoral staff, lay leadership, ecumenical partners, and community musical groups.
ACCOUNTABILITY & EVALUATION
Per The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church , the Director of Music Ministries is supervised directly by the Senior Pastor for day-to-day operations and worship planning. Personnel support, annual reviews, and compensation oversight are provided by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC).
