PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Middle School Assistant Band Director is responsible for the direction and management the overall program of instrumental music for the district. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plans activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition. All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university Valid Texas teaching certificate
Preferred:
One year of student teaching or approved internship
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program Ability to manage budget and personnel Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band and extracurricular activities Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Organizes the instruction of music classes, groups or levels assigned. Coordinates with the Head Band Director to assure a consistent, developmental program within the District curriculum. Plans for accurate assessment of the needs of students assigned and for activities to meet the needs. Maintains accurate records of student programs and attendance. Encourages appreciation for music, performance, fair competition and teamwork. Assists in the operation of the band program. Assists with the private lesson programs. Assists in scheduling, preparing and participating in sectionals, for performances, programs and competitions. Assists in supervising rehearsals. Assists with maintaining, repairing and distributing school-owned equipment and uniforms. Assists with the selection of music and maintenance of the band library. Assists with record keeping for funds received and disbursed. Assists with suggestions for budgeting and requisitions. Cooperates in sponsoring the competitive aspects of the program. Assists with preparation of students for competition. Assists with transportation and supervision of students during performances and competitions. Assists with plans for informing parents about performance and competitions. Assists with plans for reporting results of competitions. Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties. Complies with the position description for the classroom teacher. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal, the Head Band Director and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
Mental demands:
Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
