Full Job Description Job Summary:
Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church is seeking a skilled, dependable, and collaborative Part-Time Church Pianist/Organist to support the worship and music ministries of the church. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong musicianship, spiritual maturity, and an understanding of music's important role in enhancing congregational worship..
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide piano and/or organ accompaniment for weekly Sunday worship services. Support congregational hymn singing, choral anthems, and other musical elements of the liturgy. Accompany the choir during weekly rehearsals and worship services. Collaborate with the Chief Musician and clergy in selecting and preparing music appropriate to the liturgical season and the theme of each worship service. Prepare and perform both traditional and contemporary Christian music, as needed. Play for special worship services throughout the year, including Advent, Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, and Easter. Assist with weddings and funerals when requested, with supplemental compensation when applicable. Work collegially with guest vocalists, instrumentalists, string players, and other musicians. Arrive prepared and maintain a high standard of musicianship, professionalism, reliability, and punctuality.
Qualifications:
Strong proficiency in piano performance. Proficiency in organ performance is strongly preferred; however, applicants with excellent piano skills and a willingness to develop their organ-playing abilities may be considered. Ability to read music proficiently and accompany choirs, congregational singing, soloists, and instrumentalists. Experience accompanying worship in a church setting, particularly within a liturgical or traditional worship environment, is preferred. Ability to play contemporary Christian music is a strong plus. Sensitivity to reverent corporate worship and an understanding of the supporting role of music in the life and ministry of the church. Ability to collaborate effectively with clergy, choir members, music staff, volunteers, and guest musicians. Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and time-management skills. A professing Christian who understands the importance of personal integrity and the unique dynamics of church music ministry.
Schedule Expectations:
Sunday worship service at 10:00 a.m. Weekly choir rehearsal on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Contemporary music rehearsal on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. Additional rehearsals and worship services during major seasons of the church year, as needed. Occasional weddings, funerals, and other special services as needed.
