The Instrument East Heights United Methodist Church is home to a substantial Casavant pipe organ with both chancel and antiphonal divisions, offering a wide range of tonal resources for worship and organ repertoire. The chancel organ, Casavant Opus 2617, was built in 1960 by Casavant Frères of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. It was designed and voiced by Lawrence Phelps, then tonal director of Casavant. The balcony/antiphonal organ, Casavant Opus 3549, was installed in 1981. At that time, the chancel organ was enlarged and re-voiced, and a new four-manual console was installed. The chancel console was later upgraded in 1994 with the addition of an SSL memory system. To include prelude, postlude, offertory, hymns, responses, and other service music as needed. Collaborate with the Director of Music and Pastors in selecting music that supports the themes and scriptures for worship. Provide organ accompaniment for the Chancel Choir when called for. Accompany special music and guest musicians as needed. Provide occasional coverage for the East Heights UMC Collaborative Pianist, including an occasional Wednesday evening choir rehearsal. Oversee the tuning and maintenance schedule for the church organs, assisting with repair and maintenance needs when able. Play for weddings and funerals as requested. These services are compensated separately by the families through honorariums. Collaborate with the church's music and worship staff with professionalism and flexibility. Participate in other musical and worship-related activities appropriate to the position. These responsibilities represent the primary expectations of the position and are intended as a general guideline rather than an exhaustive list. Qualifications The successful candidate will demonstrate: Exceptional skills in organ performance Strong knowledge of organ repertoire, registration, and service playing Ability to accompany congregational hymn singing confidently and sensitively Ability to use registration creatively and effectively in a variety of worship settings Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills Professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and dependability Experience serving as a church organist in a worship setting is preferred.
