Fill -in church pianist First Unitarian Church of San Jose San Jose, CA Job Details Part-time $32 an hour 8 hours ago Benefits Professional development assistance Flexible schedule Qualifications Piano High school diploma or GED Full Job Description First Unitarian Church of San José seeks a Substitute Pianist We are looking for a substitute for our long-time pianist approximately one Sunday per month, sometimes including the Wednesday choir rehearsal. Position Summary:
The Substitute Pianist will play the piano during one Sunday service per month and may accompany the choir at one weekly rehearsal per month. The total paid time is expected to be 4-7 hours per month (depending on whether the agreed upon Sunday is a choir Sunday). There is potential for additional hours on an as needed basis. The Substitute Pianist job includes the following tasks, in approximate priority. During the agreed upon worship service, play gathering music at 10:45 (15 minutes before the service), play hymns, offertory, postlude, and incidental music during the service, and accompany the choir during services in which they perform. Services are typically 11 am - 12:15 pm. The pianist must arrive earlier to warm up and sound check, typically 10:30 am for ordinary services and 9:30 for services when the choir performs. Services may occasionally run long and Pianist shall continue. During each choir rehearsal, accompany the choir for 2 hours. Rehearsals are typically 7-9 pm on Wednesdays. If the rehearsal runs late, the Pianist will stop work. Provide a brief list of piano music played during the service (hymn numbers suffice for hymn books) to the tech team for use in copyright logging. Pianist is not responsible for copyright logging or research into songs. This task should be minimal to use the least amount of time. Rehearse songs to be played for the choir and for worship services.
Required skills:
excellent piano facility, sightreading ability, ability to extract vocal lines, good communication, punctuality Desirable skills: facility with Musescore, broad repertoire, ability to sing a part, previous experience with church music, previous experience with musical theater/opera/orchestra pits/band Work must be completed within the hours assigned to each pay period. Job responsibilities and tasks can be adjusted in agreement with the Minister or Personnel Directors. The Music Director may be consulted but does not have the authority to make exceptions.
