Job Overview Triumphant Lutheran Church (TLC) is a congregation of the Southwest Texas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Founded in 1979, Triumphant has grown into a faith community of about 250 active members that reaches out to its neighbors in the city of Garden Ridge and surrounding communities Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, New Braunfels and San Antonio. We celebrate the sacraments, rejoice in God's forgiving grace in Christ, express the truth of the scriptures, and go in peace to serve the Lord. The TLC Organist/Pianist position is a salaried, part-time position that is responsible for providing organ and/or piano music for the traditional worship service. The position works closely and cooperatively with the TLC Minister of Music in helping to plan music appropriate to the church's liturgy. Duties Passion for worship music, with the ability to energize and engage congregational singing. Provide the music for special services, such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve, and for special events, as needed, such as the installation service for a pastor, etc. Provide the music for additional services (e.g., weddings, funerals, memorials). Additional compensation will be paid for this requirement at $100/hour. Be able to play music from the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) Hymnal, plus classic and contemporary gospel music. Be able to perform a prelude on the organ or piano at the beginning of the service of appropriate music. Understanding and appreciation for the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) and the liturgical year. Strong communication and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally and positively with church staff, volunteers, and visitors. Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality and possess strong integrity. A team player with a creative spirit, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor who seeks to collaborate with others for the good of this faith community. Willingness to support and uphold the constitution and bylaws of the ELCA and Triumphant Lutheran Church Ability to play both traditional and contemporary worship music on the organ and/or piano. Provide all music for the traditional service (processional, post-sermon, and recessional hymns) and other supporting music as required. Proficient with sight-reading skills and ability to provide music accompaniment at Wednesday night adult choir rehearsals and worship service performances (September to May). And, as needed, for the children's choir, bell choir, and for solo singers or guest musicians. Qualifications Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.), in music or related field, or equivalent experience. Proven experience in religious music performance, including hymnody and liturgical repertoire Strong knowledge of musical liturgy, hymn music, and church service structure Proficiency in playing the organ and piano; additional skills in guitar, drums, or other musical instruments are a plus Ability to read sheet music fluently and interpret musical scores accurately Experience with musical improvisation, composition, and harmonizing melodies to enrich performances Knowledge of various music genres and the ability to blend them seamlessly in a worship setting We are also additionally hiring a Praise Band Director, and, if interested in serving that way, let us know when you apply.
