Job Title:
Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This role also assists with troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements to support efficient, patient-focused operations. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity at all times. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport according to protocol to preserve specimen quality and meet regulatory requirements. Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes as specified by protocol. Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport to maintain chain of custody and integrity of the specimens. Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support general laboratory upkeep as assigned. Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen records in laboratory systems. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control guidelines. Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information in accordance with established procedures. Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and processing to support smooth workflow. Participate in training and share best practices with colleagues to promote consistent, high-quality phlebotomy services. Make practical recommendations for workflow improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and patient experience. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a high-volume environment. Proficiency in collecting, labeling, and processing specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Ability to operate and use a centrifuge and related laboratory equipment safely and accurately. Strong attention to detail when matching requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying patient and test information. Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test requirements. Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following all safety and infection control procedures. Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to patient and provider inquiries. Customer service skills to interact with patients and healthcare staff in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner. Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone in accordance with established protocols. Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. High school diploma or
GED. 2-4
years of overall relevant experience in a laboratory, clinical, or related healthcare environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and data entry tasks. Additional Skills & Qualifications Formal phlebotomy training and certification beyond minimum state requirements is beneficial. Experience working in both laboratory and hospital settings is an advantage. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks in a time-sensitive environment. Ability to remain calm, professional, and patient-focused in a fast-paced or high-stress setting. Comfort with learning and using laboratory information systems and electronic health records. Collaborative mindset with a willingness to support team members and contribute to process improvements. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced clinical laboratory and hospital setting that requires frequent patient interaction and precise handling of biological specimens. You will regularly use phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The environment follows strict OSHA and DEP regulations, with established protocols for specimen collection, processing, storage, and transport to maintain safety and specimen integrity. Work typically involves standing for extended periods, moving between collection areas and the laboratory, and handling time-sensitive tasks. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare and laboratory setting is expected, along with adherence to all safety and infection control guidelines. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Downingtown, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
