POLICE LIEUTENANT FLSA

ExemptBRIEF DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this position is to assist the Chief of Police in managing crime prevention and law enforcement programs, activities and personnel. This is accomplished by performing administrative duties; supervising division commanders; coordinating crime prevention programs; supervising patrol division; reviewing reports and paperwork; ensuring vehicle maintenance; providing training; and performing scheduling. Other duties include serving as Chief of Police in Chief's absence. This position requires extensive knowledge of computer-based programs to include, but not limited to Tyler RMS, Brazos, CJIS Certification, TLETS Certification, Axon Evidence, Google Drive, CRIS Crash, Excel, Word and other computer programs utilized on an as needed basis.Qualifications:

Code Essential Functions % of Time L Performs administrative duties by planning and coordinating law enforcement and support activities; conducting studies; preparing reports and improvement plans and making recommendations concerning police operations and activities; and evaluating new technologies. 20 % L Supervises division commanders by performing direct supervision of division commanders and supplemental supervision of other subordinate personnel; developing training programs; and conducting background investigations on police applicants. 20 % L Coordinates crime prevention programs by meeting with community organizations and citizens to discuss current issues and activities; and providing input regarding traffic and special events to event organizers, City departments, divisions and agencies. 20 % S Reviews reports and paperwork by reviewing reports for completion and accuracy; checking all daily activity reports; reviewing time cards ; reviewing municipal court summons; and preparing correspondence with instructions for edits to reports or paperwork. 20 % L Provides training by serving as classroom and practical instructor for firearms, FTO program management and other assigned topics. 10 % S Performs scheduling by maintaining regular schedules for Police Department personnel and bailiff duty; scheduling officers for time off; and coordinating training schedules. 10 %JOB REQUIREMENTS

- Formal Education Six to twelve months of training beyond high school Experience Over 7 years officer experience / 3 years supervisory experience Supervision Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or a work unit including providing input on hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness and realigning work as needed.
Act Receives Limited Direction:
Within this job, the employee normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. The assignment may be reviewed upon completion. Performance is reviewed periodically.Technical Skills Skilled:
Work requires a comprehensive , practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Budget Responsibility Prepares documents and does research to justify language used in documents for a unit or division in a department. May recommend budget allocations. Reading Intermediate- Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Math Basic
- Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Writing Intermediate
- Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
