Job Description
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Margaret Stratton (https://www.umass.edu/biochemistry-molecular-biology/about/directory/margaret-stratton) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. We seek a motivated and creative scientist to lead projects at the interface of structural biology, biochemistry, and cell signaling, with a particular focus on protein kinases and phosphorylation-dependent regulatory mechanisms. Our work aims to uncover the molecular basis of signaling processes that control neuronal function, fertility, and human disease. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and well-supported research environment with access to state-of-the-art resources in structural biology, including single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, protein biochemistry, and quantitative approaches to studying protein structure and function. This position offers the opportunity to drive independent, mechanistic projects, develop new experimental approaches, and contribute to high-impact publications. Essential Functions Perform research in the area of structural biology, protein purification, and assay development. Write reports and/or papers on completed research in cooperation with professorial supervisor. Maintain literature awareness of research area. Present research results orally to professional groups. Participate in group and divisional seminar in field(s) of study. Interact collegially with others in the laboratory, the department, and elsewhere at the University. Collaborate with professorial supervisor in the preparation of research materials. Maintain laboratory apparatus as applicable in the best possible order; look up catalog numbers and cost of needed research items. Train junior personnel in basic laboratory methods. Other Functions Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, equality and inclusiveness. Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean's strategic priorities. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences. Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field. Strong background in protein expression, purification, and biochemical characterization. Interest in mechanistic biology and signaling systems. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Preferred Qualifications Experience in cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, or related structural approaches is preferred. Additional Details At UMass Amherst and in the College of Natural Sciences, we strive to be a community where every individual feels a sense of belonging, where every individual is included, and where every individual is valued.
