GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The position is responsible for the administration and supervision of an elementary school and its programs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Master's Degree in education administration; eligibility for Virginia Post Graduate license with appropriate administration endorsement. Licensure as a building level principal through the Commonwealth of Virginia (Administration and Supervision, Prek-12 endorsement). Preferred Extensive administrative and educational experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
This job description is intended to accurately reflect the position's activities and requirements; however, the administration reserves the right to modify, add, or remove duties and assign other duties as necessary. Serves as instructional leader; uses data to lead the school's efforts in ensuring high academic achievement of all students; provides an environment that maximizes the learning potential of all students and employees. Works with other school and division administrators to provide an instructional program consistent with the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the school division. Ensures the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision, instructional leadership, and evaluation. Works with the school staff and community to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning and appropriate student behavior, as detailed in the NCPS Student Code of Conduct. Utilizes available central office administrative and supervisory personnel to ensure an instructional program that results in student growth and - at a minimum - grade-level proficiency. Supervises and evaluates the performance of each member of the school staff and establishes individual programs for improvement consistent with the division's Strategic Plan and Virginia's Evaluation and Performance Standards. Assigns students to classes, programs, and activities designed to promote maximum learning. Advises the Human Resources office of staff needs, and participates in the recruitment, employment, assignment, promotion, transfer, non-renewal, and dismissal of licensed and support personnel. Works with other school and division administrators to provide for horizontal and vertical articulation of the instructional program and unity of purpose. Fosters effective school-community relations by emphasizing good communication, providing opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss student progress and other matters of mutual concern, and by encouraging community involvement in school activities. Fosters effective school-community relations by working with advisory groups and community social service agencies and by facilitating community use of the school as established by school board policies. Promotes, supports, and models good working relationships among all staff members. Devises and administers a school budget, utilizing all available funds, which is consistent with division instructional and administrative goals; supervises the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds. Exercises leadership in the development, implementation, and interpretation of school board policies and division regulations. Maintains proper utilization, care and attractiveness of buildings and grounds. Engages in professional learning, to keep abreast of developments in elementary education and in the field of education generally. Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Designee.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of an elementary school; thorough knowledge of curriculum design, implementation, evaluation and refinement; thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures; knowledge and understanding of student growth and development; knowledge and understanding of the conditions and dynamics of the diverse school community; skill in oral and written communications; ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, students, parents, teachers, support staff, associates and the community; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to set expectations, build capacity, model learning, lead symbolically, manage effectively, and respond to constituent groups and the community.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone and to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, crawl, walk, push, pull, and reach overhead.
